2026: Experimental Data Center Trials Begin
Hosting-provider RUVDS together with the University of Marine Practice and Arctic Tourism and the company Stratonautica"" began testing the capabilities of the experimental, data center collected in the concept of minimum energy consumption, to solve scientific problems in the context of the need to minimize the impact on the environment of Antarctica. RuVDS announced this on March 13, 2026.
The company's computing power was launched at Bellingshausen station. The equipment was delivered to the station in two stages: first by plane from Russia to the Argentine city of Ushaya, and then by sea, through the Drake Strait, one of the most dangerous routes in the world's oceans.
| We approached the project prepared, already having the experience of launching a data center at the North Pole. But with Antarctica, of course, everything was more complicated: both logistical difficulties and, in general, the large scale of the project affected. Our data center is designed both for solving scientific problems and for access to ordinary users. We hope that the location in Antarctica will serve for several months, after which the equipment will be donated for use to the station staff, - said the general director of RUVDS Nikita Tsaplin. |
The list of devices delivered to the Antarctic station included secure server equipment, selected including taking into account the difficulties of the sea crossing, as well as a signal receiver from the spacecraft. Transportation was provided with the support of the Stratonavtika Aerospace Laboratory.
| It was not an easy route. The server is ready to work with users. Of course, this is an experimental non-profit project, but, being a real data center, it serves as proof of the prospects for server equipment in the most difficult conditions. I am sure this experience will be useful, among other things, for the development of the Russian North, - said Denis Efremov, founder of Stratonautics. |
