At the end of March 2024, it became known about the creation of an AI system for controlling ships of the Northern Sea Route. The implementation of this project is carried out by the FSUE Atomflot controlled by Rosatom.

It is assumed that the digital platform will be able to control the movement of ships along artificial tracks, choosing the optimal route without human intervention. The system is designed to provide autonomous navigation of ships in the difficult Arctic conditions of the Northern Sea Route.

The project will be implemented in two stages. First, an intelligent system will be implemented that can analyze marine conditions and route ships in the safest and most efficient way. At the same time, the developers state that the main difficulty of the task is the variability of Arctic ice, which requires high adaptability and predictive ability from AI.

The creation of autopilot for ships continues Russia's work to turn the Northern Sea Route into a high-tech maritime corridor, which began with the development of the concept of unmanned vessels in 2015. Earlier, the creation of digital infrastructure, including the digital twin of the route, began, and the foundation was laid for the future integrated management of shipping.

According to Maxim Kulinko, Deputy Director of the Directorate of the Northern Sea Route of Rosatom, the creation of a single digital platform for services of the Northern Sea Route, which is now being developed by the state corporation, will improve the safety of ships along the route, as well as the economic efficiency of cargo transportation in difficult Arctic conditions. Kulinko noted that it is planned to create a single digital platform with services that provide data on weather and ice conditions, the location of ships and icebreakers, port congestion, as well as the ability to issue permits for the passage of ships through the NSR, monitoring, dispatching, fleet management.[1]
