Development of a special design and manufacturing technology for the central swirler of the low-emission combustion chamber of the gas turbine GTD-110

The Rybinsk enterprise UEC Saturn (part United Engine Corporation of the State Corporation) Rostec continues to produce an industrial gas turbine engine by the additive method of swirlers. The parts are designed for a domestic production gas turbine of high power GTD-110M. The UEC announced this on September 14, 2023.

UEC-Saturn specialists have developed a special design and technology for the manufacture of a central swirler of the low-emission combustion chamber of the GTD-110M gas turbine. The part has a very complex geometry, including developed interior surfaces and channels.

In the manufacture of this part, a nickel-based heat-resistant alloy is used. The alloy, also developed by UEC-Saturn specialists, passed the general qualification and was approved for the production of parts of gas turbine engines, including aircraft ones.

The production of parts by layer-by-layer selective laser fusion is organized at the UEC-Saturn enterprise and at the Center for Additive Technologies (CAT).

Shaping this complex detail with traditional technology is simply impossible. Therefore, the combustion chamber swirler was designed taking into account the possibilities of additive technologies. The technology successfully developed at UEC-Saturn has been transferred to the Center for Additive Technologies for the production of part of the parts blanks, "said Denis Fedoseev, deputy chief engineer of the experimental plant for additive technologies at UEC-Saturn, an expert at UEC.

GTD-110M is a large-capacity serial gas turbine engine designed for use as part of gas turbine power and steam-gas plants. Previously, similar turbines in terms of capacity were imported from abroad. The engine is designed to drive electric generators as part of gas turbine power and steam-gas plants with an electric capacity of 115 MW. The distinctive features of the engine GTD-110M compared to foreign counterparts - lower weight and dimensions, as well as high fuel efficiency.

Creating a turbine

On January 18, 2023, Rostec announced that it had manufactured the first domestic gas turbine of high power. We are talking about a GTD-110M model that has passed successful tests and will be transferred to the Udarnaya TPP in the Krasnodar Territory.

The unit is designed for use as part of gas turbine power and steam-gas plants at generating facilities of the Unified Energy System of Russia. Previously, similar turbines in terms of capacity were imported from abroad. The engine is designed to drive electric generators as part of gas turbine power and steam-gas plants with an electric capacity of 115 MW. The distinctive features of the GTD-110M engine compared to foreign counterparts are lower weight and dimensions, as well as high fuel efficiency, the press service of Rostec reported.

This is the first domestic turbine of high power, which is embodied in the "iron" and has reached the stage of mass production. It is focused, first of all, on the domestic market and is designed to replace foreign turbines that are not supplied to the country due to sanctions, - said Vladimir Artyakov, First Deputy General Director of Rostec.

According to him, from 2024 it is planned to produce at least two such turbines annually with a further increase in production volumes. High-capacity turbines will GTD-110M become the basis of modernization programs for thermal power plants and state district power plants of generating companies.

According to UEC Sergey Mikhailov, Deputy General Director for Energy and Industrial Programs, the GTD-110M is not inferior in technical parameters to foreign counterparts, but at the same time it has smaller weight and size characteristics, which significantly expands the possibilities for delivering a gas turbine engine to customers.
