2024: The emergence of the function of detecting hidden cameras in the room

In early August 2024, Xiaomi introduced a new operating system called HyperOS 2.0 based on the Android platform. One of the stated features of the proposed update was the hidden camera detection feature, which can solve an important privacy issue faced by travelers and tourists who often change holiday destinations.

According to a report by news agency XiaomiTime, the HyperOS 2.0 update searches for hidden cameras using Wireless LAN (WLAN) search. Thus, the smartphone will be able to warn the owner about the potential threat of privacy violations and unauthorized surveillance, provided that the hidden cameras are connected to the local network.

It is assumed that users will be able to scan for suspicious devices with one click. After activating the application, users will only need to click the "Start Scanning" button and wait for the result. After the scan is complete, the application will reflect the presence of cameras in the room.

The new application resembles Ingram, which is available on GitHub and checks IP addresses to detect webcam vulnerabilities. This tool also includes features such as signal strength analysis, SSID translation, MAC address identification and network traffic analysis, but it is not yet known whether similar add-ons will be available to Xiaomi users.

The Hidden Camera Scan feature is due in October 2024 on Xiaomi devices along with the HyperOS 2.0 update, a year after HyperOS 1.0 was released. In addition, the update is expected to improve the performance and connectivity of the devices, as well as provide more options for configuring the smartphone.[1]

2023: OS Announcement

On October 17, 2023, Xiaomi announced its own operating system called HyperOS, based on Android. It is planned to use it not only on various mobile devices, including smartphones and tablets, but also on electrified cars.

It is noted that HyperOS has been developed with an eye on a wide range of Xiaomi products. The idea of creating the platform began in 2014, when the company had just begun to develop the direction of the Internet of Things (IoT). Actual work on the OS began in 2017: thus, the project took about six years to implement. Xiaomi says the new software will bring together its entire product ecosystem in 200 categories, including smart home devices, electric vehicles and more.

It is noted that HyperOS will first appear on smartphones of the Xiaomi 14 series. In the future, the new platform will gradually change the MIUI shell on the market, which has been used on the company's devices for about 13 years (by October 2023).

Jun stressed that HyperOS will put people at the center of the digital ecosystem, where they can effectively and comfortably interact not only with other users, but also with their cars, smart households and a variety of devices. At the same time, the head of Xiaomi did not go into details regarding the functionality of the OS and the possibility of its use on existing devices.[2]
