2021: PT Astra Fact Font Release

On June 4, 2021, the Astra Linux group of companies, a player in the domestic market for secure operating systems and virtualization platforms, told TAdviser about the release of the PT Astra Fact font. The product was developed by the Russian company ParTime by order of the Astra Linux Group of Companies and completely replaces Verdana, which is used in OCMicrosoft Windows interfaces.

PT Astra Fact is designed for Astra Linux on-screen interfaces in a wide range of devices, ranging from 4K monitors to tablets and smartphones. The Russian font can already be installed in the OS, and it will be seen by the user in all elements of the system: in the names of buttons and menu sections, in tooltips, in the list of fonts for typing, etc. In the future, PT Astra Fact will be used in the default OS interface.

PT Astra Fact is based on the Fact font family, a universal open grotesque also developed by ParTime. A feature of the font is the qualitative display of characters when smoothing modes are turned off, in subpixel and gray (Grayscale) smoothing modes and black and white (Black & White) mode. In all these cases, text on screens of various resolutions, including mobile devices, is well readable.

Widely used fonts of the American corporation Monotype Imaging Inc. - Times New Roman, Arial, Courier New and Verdana - due to sanctions restrictions were not licensed for inclusion in the Astra Linux family of operating systems, so it was decided to develop a line of imported non-volatile analogues. PT Astra Fact became the third domestic font in the OS. The first two, PT Astra Serif and PT Astra Sans, were released in 2019. This is a full metric identical replacement of Times New Roman for drawing up documents in accordance with the current GOST R 7.0.97-2016. The use of these fonts avoids claims by the copyright holder and situations where the appearance of the document is distorted because the font used to create it is not present in the Astra Linux OS.

"To use foreign proprietary fonts, you need to purchase licenses from their copyright holder - Monotype Imaging Inc. At the same time, the license agreement includes US jurisdiction, and the risks associated with violating their sanctions legislation are quite serious. Therefore, imported non-volatile domestic fonts are created for Astra Linux. The creation of PT Astra Fact is a logical step towards the creation and development of Russian digital products, "said Sergey Bobryshev, commercial director of ParaTaip.

2016: Release of PT Astra Sans and PT Astra Serif

In order to ensure import substitution and the transition to the use of domestic information technologies, the developer of the operating systems Astra LinuxAO "NPO RusBITeh" and the developer of national fonts LLC NPP "ParTaip" on October 3, 2016 presented publicly available domestic fonts PT Astra Sans and PT New Astra Serif, which are full-fledged metric analogues of the RomOmTimes font.

The use of these fonts instead of Times New Roman does not lead to distortion of documents, but free distribution and cross-platform, combined with a wonderful design, make them available and convenient for use in any operating systems and office software.^[1]
