2025: Product Announcement

On April 24, 2025, the American company Becton Dickinson introduced the Phasix ST product for the treatment of umbilical hernia. It is claimed to be the first and only fully bioabsorbable implant of this type on the market.

Umbilical hernia is a pathological condition in which internal abdominal organs (more often intestinal loops or omentum) protrude under the skin through the dilated umbilical ring. The reason is the imbalance between intraperitoneal pressure and anterior abdominal wall strength caused by anatomical features or functional tissue changes.

Umbilical hernia surgery may be performed using low-traumatic endoscopic techniques (through punctures) or by an open method (through an incision). The procedure includes the extraction of the hernial sac, cutting the adhesions, repairing the internal organs and eliminating the defect of the anterior abdominal wall. The hole is sutured or overlapped by a mesh implant, which reduces the risk of recurrence as it evenly distributes the load on the surrounding tissues.

As part of the Phasix ST implant, poly-4-hydroxybutyrate (P4HB) is used - a special biologically obtained material. In terms of shape and functionality, the novelty is identical to the Ventralex ST product - it is a mesh implant designed specifically for hernioplasty of umbilical, small ventral hernias and closure of postoperative defects. In this case, the Phasix ST is completely resorbed within about 30 days after installation. Among the advantages of the product, Becton Dickinson highlights an improved design that facilitates placement, positioning and lateral fixation. Device expands possibilities of umbilical hernia treatment taking into account individual needs of patients.[1]
