2024: Capture of one of the robots by the Russian military
In mid-May 2024, it became known that the Russian military in the special operation zone seized the THeMIS robotic platform supplied to Ukraine by the Estonian company Milrem Robotics. The Center for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies (CFTA) is ready to pay a reward of 2 million rubles for this trophy.
Deliveries of THeMIS robots to Ukraine began in 2022. The car is equipped with a diesel-electric power plant, which allows you to reach speeds of up to 20 km/h. The tracked platform can be used for transporting goods or as a chassis for installing weapons - machine guns, an automatic 30 mm gun, etc. The battery life reaches 1.5 hours, when using a diesel engine - 15 hours.
Judging by the photos published by the Telegram channel "Two Majors," the Russian military seized the cargo version of the tracked vehicle. The platform, as indicated on the side nameplate, weighs 1630 kg and can carry goods weighing up to 750 kg. Dimensions are 2400 × 2050 × 1150 mm. CFTA expresses interest in obtaining this machine.
The center is ready to pay two million [rubles] to the fighters who seized this platform. In the near future, we will begin consultations with in Ministry of Defence order to establish all the circumstances for certain, - quotes TASS the words of the head of the center Ruslan Pukhov. |
According to Milrem Robotics, more than ten THeMIS devices have been delivered to Ukraine in options for delivery of goods and for demining. Where and under what circumstances the Russian military managed to seize the robotic platform is not specified as of the end of May 2024. Pukhov added that it is necessary to make sure that there is no serious damage to the trophy and its suitability for research.[1][2]
2022: NATO deploys tank-like machine gun robots in Holland
On October 14, 2022, the Ministry of Defense of the Netherlands announced the adoption of unmanned ground vehicles (UGV) of the tracked type. We are talking about modular robotic complexes THeMIS (Tracked Hybrid Modular Infantry Systems) manufactured by the Estonian defense company Milrem Robotics.
As part of the experiment, four THeMIS machines are involved. Thus, Holland became the first NATO country to operate these combat complexes. Outwardly, the ground drone resembles a small tank. It is allowed to install weapons of different types: in the case of robots tested in Holland, this is a machine gun. The payload can be changed depending on the operations and operating conditions.
The machine is equipped with a hybrid power plant, including diesel and electric motors. According to the manufacturer, the operating time with fully refueled tanks reaches 15 hours, and in silent mode - 1.5 hours. Dimensions are 240 × 205 × 198 cm, equipped weight - 1930 kg. The robot is capable of speeds up to 20 km/h. Ground clearance reaches 60 cm, which allows you to effectively move in difficult conditions. The equipment includes all-weather long-range sensors. Control is carried out remotely from a distance of up to 10 km.
{{quote 'As part of the operational experiment, we used four combat unmanned vehicles. As far as I know, we have not seen this before in the West. These are not just tests at the training ground. We are under the scrutiny of Russians, and therefore robots are operated in a semi-operative environment, "said Lieutenant Colonel Sjoerd Mevissen, commander of robotics and autonomous systems of the Royal Netherlands Army[3] }}
