2024: Application of a digital twin to test the aircraft engine PD-8

Rybinsk enterprise UEC Saturn (part of) United Engine Corporation Rostec introduces the concept of digital certification. The UEC announced this on May 7, 2024. The use of technologies digital twin computer and modeling will help reduce the volume of field tests and speed up the certification of the aircraft engine PD-8 for the import-substituted passenger liner SJ-100.

The list of evidence documentation for passing the certification of the aircraft engine PD-8 includes the results of computer modeling. It allows virtual tests of both individual components of the power plant and the system as a whole.

Digital tests can be used to confirm compliance with the requirements for cooling and fire safety of the engine, its performance under adverse atmospheric conditions, such as rain, hail and icing. Also, computer modeling allows you to check the performance of the power plant when foreign objects, for example, birds, hit.

The PD-8 engine is created in a short time, and during its certification we use the most modern technologies. The point of digital certification is not to replace real engine certification tests, but to reduce their volume and not spend additional resources on it. First, the new engine is "tested" using digital twins and virtual tests. And only then, when everything is honed, it is the turn of the full-scale tests. The validation basis for certification is formed taking into account the results of computer modeling. In the future, this will also significantly reduce the volume of bench tests when creating new engine modifications, PD-8 said Kirill Vinogradov, deputy head of the UEC-Saturn settlement and research OKB-1.
