2020: Fire fighting and process control systems run under Astra Linux

On November 13, 2020, it became known that specialists from the Tensor instrument plant created automatic complexes using the Astra Linux Special Edition special purpose operating system for the Belarusian nuclear power plant.

As explained, the project, the general contractor of which is the Engineering Division of ROSATOM State Corporation, provides for the construction of two power units with next-generation reactors III + VVER-1200. Their total capacity is 2,400 MW, and the use of passive protection technologies and a number of other factors provide an adequate degree of safety. The first power unit has already been officially launched on November 7, 2020, the start of its industrial operation is planned for 2021, and the start of the second - for 2022. As of November 2020, VVER-1200 reactors are operating at the Novovoronezhskaya and Leningrad nuclear power plants, and the first power unit built in Belarus. In the Astra Linux Special Edition OS environment, SCADA TRACE MODE software from the Russian company AdAstra operates, which is involved in two solutions developed by the Tensor plant to equip power units. The first is the fire protection monitoring and control system (FP I & C), and the second is the automated process control system (APCS) of engineering systems.

FP I & C is designed for comprehensive fire protection of nuclear power plants, oil and gas complex enterprises, etc. The system automatically provides early detection of fire and smoke, notifies duty personnel about the fire and the fire zone. Also, with the help of FP I & C, remote control of process equipment of water, gas and powder fire extinguishing systems, control of fire doors closure, diagnostics of equipment with notification of malfunctions, as well as data archiving are carried out.

The system of automated control of fire protection and APCS of engineering systems of the Belarusian NPP provides control of more than 850 thousand signals from various devices of the power plant. These signals are transmitted to 600 programmable logic controllers PPKP-01F, created at the Tensor plant in Dubna. Data from the controllers is sent in real time to the operators PC. The software for them was developed in the domestic SCADA-system TRACE MODE, and it, in turn, runs the Russian Astra Linux Special Edition.

SCADA TRACE MODE also provides solutions to such problems at the Belarusian NPP as combining several upper-level devices into a single system, centralized processing of data and their presentation to the operator with display on the monitor of information on the fire-fighting state of protected premises, operation of fire extinguishing systems, process parameters and equipment condition. In addition, the SCADA TRACE MODE user can, depending on the situation, select and apply either the automatic fire extinguishing system control mode or the remote option, when the processes are started by command from its AWS.

Earlier, SCADA TRACE MODE under the Astra Linux OS was already used in such projects. For example, in China, at the Tianwan nuclear power plant, this software was involved in a fire extinguishing system. To implement the project with the Belarusian power plant, its application was scaled: now the joint solution of Astra Linux and AdAstra has become the basis not only of the fire extinguishing system, but also of the process control of engineering systems.
