Rosatom sterilized over 17 million masks

On May 12, 2020 it became known that the Rosatom state corporation continues sterilization of medical products for fight against a coronavirus. As of morning 17,230,063 pieces of protective masks (plus 1,657,660 for May 8-10) and also 245,000 pieces of the medical transport systems used for testing for presence of COVID-19 virus on May 11 are sterilized (the value did not change).

Sterilization is performed by JSC Sterion (enters a guidance loop of JSC Rusatom Healthcare), which more than 58 million medical masks signed the contract with Delrus company for sterilization. The enterprise is transferred from two-shift on a three-shift (round-the-clock) operation mode that allows to process up to 10 million masks a week.

Besides, within implementation of the contract with HAM company the sterilization of the medical transport systems is carried out. By the end of April, 2020 the volume of the processed transport systems will be 150 thousand pieces.

As the capital technology equipment the linear particle accelerator of electrons of UEL 10-10 with energy of 10 10 kW MeV is used. Sterilization is performed by impact of a bunch of the accelerated electrons on the processed products loaded on the special pipeline. This technology allows not to unpack products which are earlier packed by producers into a cardboard transport container. Besides, after processing of products a flow of the accelerated electrons, products become suitable for use at once. Here decontamination (unlike other methods of sterilization) or other additional actions, before the actual use is not required. 1 box (980 masks) can be processed in 37 seconds.

JSC NIFHI of L.Ya. Karpov and JSC NIITFA (the enterprises are included into a guidance loop of JSC Rusatom Healthcare) were connected to work on sterilization ^[1].

Contract for sterilization more than 58 million medical masks

On April 2, 2020 Rosatom reported that JSC Sterion created with its participation more than 58 million medical masks signed the contract with Delrus company for sterilization.

Delrus performs deliveries of sterile masks to the Russian medical institutions. Need for sterilization of masks before their use is caused by the fact that internal surfaces of a mask contact to mucous membranes of the person.

According to the CEO of ROSATOM State Corporation Alexey Likhachyov, sterilization using radiation technologies ensures the guaranteed safety of the processed medical products that is especially important in the conditions of a present pandemic.

On the equipment of JSC Sterion the first lot of products in number of 92 thousand masks is already processed. The enterprise is urgently transferred from two-shift on a three-shift (round-the-clock) operation mode that will allow to process up to 10 million masks a week.

According to the CEO of integrator of ROSATOM State Corporation in the field of radiation technologies in medicine and the industry of JSC Rusatom Healthcare Alexander Shibanov, will be connected in the next few days to work on sterilization by JSC NIFHI of L.Ya. Karpov (enters a guidance loop of JSC Rusatom Healthcare), based on which about 3 million masks a week are going to sterilize.

Also other enterprises which are engaged in sterilization of medical products are also already involved, - he added.
