At the end of September, 2019 one of the most prestigious universities in the world, the Swiss University of St. Gallen, implemented a blockchain system for authentication of diplomas.
The new certificate of protection against unauthorized access will allow to trace counterfeit diplomas. Thanks to blockchain technologies the staff of educational institution will be able to confirm authenticity of the diploma within several seconds whereas regularly this procedure takes several days or even weeks.
The director of the university of information technologies Harald Rotter emphasized that need for similar innovations ripened long ago, and the blockchain perfectly is suitable for transfer and authentication of diplomas. For achievement of effective objectives the university decided to cooperate with Swiss BlockFactory startup company. Within the agreement the startup will provide to the university the platform on the basis of Ethereum blockchain.
The university of St. Gallen not the only higher educational institution, intended to fight against counterfeit diplomas. The Ministry of Education of Malaysia announced that in 2020 it will begin to implement the E-Skrol program using blockchain technology of NEM. It will also be used for authentication of diplomas as steel counterfeits negatively affects the state higher education system.
Bahrain also takes measures for ensuring authenticity of the diplomas. In January, 2019 the Bahraini university announced that it will issue diplomas using blockchain technology. In June, 2019 this group was adjoined also by the Canadian technical institute - 4800 of his graduates became the first specialists who gained the diploma about a blockchain protection. Besides, in 2018 University of Basel issued to 100 students certificates with use the main blockchain system of Ethereum.[1]
