In June, 2013 Microsoft announced that the next version of relational DBMS Microsoft SQL Server 2014 will provide a considerable gain of performance within systems online of transactions. New DBMS will have the "engine" which is built in by in-memory OLTP constructed on Heckaton technologies, new development of Microsoft Research.

Quentin Clark, the vice president of corporation for the product SQL Server, so commented on innovation: "We transferred process of transactions directly to the database. It is not an independent product, but a part of the program. We do it to reach unprecedentedly low delays and high capacity concerning data".

Microsoft Heckaton is in-memory technology, however, different from other in-memory of data warehouses, such as Oracle TimesTen. The difference consists that in this case not all processing but only some chosen sections of data is transferred to RAM. In Microsoft laboratory use of Hekaton allowed to reach 50-fold reduction of time of transactions, and the first users who tested technology, noted performance improvement for 16%, representatives of corporation said.

Microsoft promises what in addition to performance improvement of transactions of SQL Server of 2014 will also allow to lower equipment costs as requirements to "iron", necessary for work of DBMS, will become more democratic regarding the computing power and the number of servers.

Heckaton works with data selectively, placing only the "hottest" (hot data) demanded and relevant for processing in RAM. Besides, a system saves integrity of transactions even in case of a system exit out of operation, placing them in a separate log.

One more feature of a system consists that Heckaton allows to reveal the most often used procedures and to compile them in machine code. The machine code is, as a rule, executed much quicker, than the code written in language of the top level, such as, for example, SQL.

Also Heckaton increases performance because does not block the data table for record of different processes when they address the same table at the same time. The conflict can arise only at data writing in the same line two processes at the same time. However, even separate lines are not blocked for updating in such cases as in Microsoft thought up how to part processes in similar cases in parallel.

Microsoft already has a number of the products using the principle of in-memory of data processing. For example,Microsoft Parallel Data Warehouse uses similar technology for the analysis of data bulks. Also PowerPivot available within Excel 2010 uses in-memory compression of separate columns of data for the accelerated processing. In SQL Server 2012 this approach to processing of columns were also borrowed.

In Microsoft give Bwin company which using systems increased number of transactions in the application from 15 thousand to 250 thousand per second as one of the first SQL Server users of 2014.

Microsoft will provide more details about new SQL Server of 2014 in July, 2013. The preview of a system will become available at the end of June, 2013, and the commercial version will appear in the market at the beginning of 2014.

2014: The commercial version of SQL Server 2014 is ready

On March 18, 2014 Microsoft announced readiness for the output of SQL Server DBMS server 2014. The release of the version of a product is planned for April 1, 2014.

The main innovations of SQL Server of 2014 - support of the concept of transactions of in-memory, a possibility of creation of the hybrid cloud and local environment.

Among other noticeable innovations of SQL Server of 2014 functions of the hybridism allowing to separate data into local and cloud that allows to recover more simply a DB in case of accident are selected quicker to perform reservation of big databases.

Innovation helps to carry out seamless integration between SQL Server of 2014 in own data-center of the client and the SQL Azure cloud environment in the data-center of Microsoft, and the AlwaysOn function available in both versions of DBMS will allow to guarantee permanent data availability for users.

Possibilities of Hekaton/OLTP will be available not to all SQL Server users of 2014. Such opportunities are included only in Enterprise the version of SQL 2014. Versions of Standard, BI, Web and Express SKU work without this technology.

Microsoft SQL Server 2014

On April 24, 2014 the Microsoft company submitted the new version of the platform of data management of SQL Server 2014.

SQL Server platform 2014 provides complex approach to management and data analysis, in particular:

  • the processing of calculations in RAM (in-memory OLTP) increasing performance on average by 10 – 30 times
  • higher performance of request processing and speed of data loading,
  • tools for a business intelligence both for private, and for corporate users,
  • the support of crucial applications conforming to requirements of performance, security, scalability
  • the powerful analytical tools convenient in use and having the usual interface,


The Microsoft platform helps to manage the data of any volume placed on own infrastructure or in "cloud". Interaction with Microsoft Azure is provided to Microsoft SQL Server 2014 - using resources of a public cloud of Microsoft customers will create cloud reservation of the local systems and disaster recovery from "cloud", increasing fault tolerance of applications, critical for business.
