2020: There was a new technology of cancer therapy - carbon therapy (CIRT)

At the end of October, 2020 DOTmed.com submitted the list of new methods of therapy of cancer among which a specific place is held by carbon therapy (CIRT). At this approach for radiation of a tumor particles more massive, than protons or neutrons are used that provides faster and expressed result.

At such radiation the tumor is bombarded by the charged cores of carbon. They are especially heavy therefore this type of therapy is also called radiation by heavy ions. The carbon radiotheraphy draws more and more attention of scientists and developers as clinical trials showed its advantages in treatment of many types of cancer, such as prostate cancer, heads and necks, lungs and a liver, sarcomas of bones and soft fabrics, local and recurrent cancer of a rectum and a pancreatic cancer, including a locally-spread form.

In certain cases carbon therapy is choice therapy as radiation can be carried out with a high accuracy and the minimum ghost effects. Bunches of the charged particles can reach even deeply lying tumors - depending on the speed and energy ions can get into fabric on depth up to 30 centimeters. Photons cannot get on such depth as lose the most part of the energy when passing through surrounding fabrics.

Ions strike a tumor more precisely and pointwise release the destructive energy, almost without mentioning surrounding healthy fabrics. This advantage is of particular importance at treatment of tumors which lie in close proximity to the vital fabrics, for example, at a skull base, near an optic nerve or intestines. Carbon therapy also has clear advantages at treatment of the types hard to cure of cancer which are not responding to normal radiation therapy.[1]
