2020: Amazon became the largest clothing seller in the United States
At the end of 2020, Amazon became the largest clothing retailer in the United States, removing Walmart from first place. The COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic strengthened Amazon's position in this area, as during the lockdown, consumers flocked to the site for both essential goods and secondary goods.
According to a Wells Fargo study, Amazon's clothing and footwear sales in the United States in 2020 grew by about 15% to more than $41 billion, which is 20-25% higher than Walmart's rival. Thus, Amazon sales account for 11% to 12% of all clothing sold in the United States, and 34% to 35% of all clothing sold online. According to analysts, in 2021, the volume of sales of clothes and shoes on Amazon will exceed $45 billion.
Wall Street analysts have predicted for years that Amazon will bypass Walmart and take first place in the US clothing market. Initially, Amazon was successful, offering a wide range of basic services, but since then it has expanded its business in the field of fashion. Now it includes an ever-growing list of well-known brands. In the fall of 2020, the company also launched online luxury fashion stores.
According to Wells Fargo analysts, Amazon now claims a share of 30% to 35% in the online clothing and footwear market. For comparison, Amazon sold almost 7 times more clothes/shoes than the second largest store on the Internet (Macy's). Although Amazon has become a leading player in the clothing market, Wells Fargo believes that the company has much to develop - for example, it can offer more brands that consumers need.
Until Amazon becomes a platform that works with companies to promote brands, and does not consider these relationships exclusively as transactional, companies that fiercely protect their brands (for example, Nike) will not sell their products on Amazon, analysts say.[1] |
