2020: Exports of medical masks and respirators from China reach $53.8 billion

The export of medical masks and respirators from China at the end of 2020 reached $53.8 billion against $5.4 billion. This is evidenced by data from analysts at the Peterson Institute for World Economy (PIIE).

Supplies of protective shields worn on the head abroad increased from $13.3 billion to $16.8 billion. Exports of protective clothing grew from $9.9 billion to $10.8 billion, and gloves - by $1 billion, to $3.9 billion. The export of medical protective glasses from the Middle Kingdom grew from $1.4 billion to $1.9 billion, shoe covers - from $0.9 billion to $1 billion.

If in 2019 China he exported medical personal protective equipment (PPE) for $22.9 billion, then in 2020, which accounted for the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, the COVID-19 figure reached $88.1 billion.

The growth in China's income is caused by a sharp increase in demand due to the pandemic, even against the background of increased production. In April 2020, the export price of one medical mask increased by 720.8% compared to December 2019. Another factor contributing to the rise in prices for Chinese products is the restriction of exports in order to meet the needs of the domestic market. Protective suits for the same period rose in price by 536.2%.

According to the report, despite the sharp increase in supplies, masks from China were not enough to meet global demand, which was growing at an "explosive pace." At the same time, the US authorities imposed duties on the import of PPE from China. As a result, this did not allow them to provide themselves with goods to combat the spread of coronavirus.

According to the Peterson Institute for World Economy, the largest importers of Chinese PPE in 2020 were the United States and the European Union, which purchased protective equipment for $24.6 billion and $23.4 billion, respectively. The indicator of Russia was $2 billion against $0.57 billion at the end of 2019.[1]
