2024:75 thousand Russians arrived in Argentina from the beginning of 2022
At the end of July 2024, it became known that after the start of a special operation, more than 75 thousand Russian citizens moved to Argentina. Another 60 thousand Russians moved to Brazil.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the Russians founded large diasporas in Buenos Aires and in the coastal Brazilian city of Florianopolis. Visitors open Russian-language beauty salons, restaurants, kindergartens and small theaters. It is said that since the beginning of 2022, Russians have invested more than $300 million in the development of Brazil. In addition, in 2023, Russian citizens were one of the main buyers of real estate in Argentina.
The first wave of Russian citizens heading to Latin America included a large number of families who are expecting a child. The fact is that in Argentina, newborns are granted immediate citizenship, and their parents are granted a temporary residence and work permit. Brazil also offers benefits to young parents, allowing immigrants to apply for citizenship after having a child in the country. In addition, passports of Argentina and Brazil open the borders of many countries, including European ones. At the same time, the decision of Russians to move en masse to Argentina is called risky by The Wall Street Journal, since inflation in the country exceeds 270%, and the poverty rate reaches 56%. On the other hand, the economic crisis in Argentina gave some Russians the opportunity to buy apartments at reduced prices.
At the same time, as noted, from the beginning of March 2022 to the end of 2023, about 36 thousand Ukrainians entered Brazil, many of whom settled in the south, where the climate is cooler and the crime rate is lower than in Rio de Janeiro or São Paulo. During the same period, approximately 11 thousand citizens of Ukraine arrived in Argentina.[1]
2023: The number of residence permits issued to Russians has grown 4 times to 3700 people
In 2023, approximately 3,700 Russians received a residence permit in Argentina, which is a record figure. This is four times more than the result for the previous year, when the number of residence permits was 919. Such data in early March 2024 is disclosed by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the republic.
According to reports, RBC referring to the statistics received, from 2022 to the beginning of 2024, 5,100 Russians became residents of Argentina. For comparison: in 2020, 390 citizens received a residence permit in the republic, and in Russia 2021 - 320. Argentina is considered one of the easiest countries in terms of migration procedures. At the same time, the Argentine passport gives the right to visa-free travel to 170 countries of the world, including,, and states European Union. Britain Japan New Zealand
It is noted that from 2022 to the beginning of 2024, more than 11 thousand Russians entered Argentina for the purpose of migration. According to available statistics, in 2023, 8400 citizens of the Russian Federation arrived in this country for the purpose of migration, in 2022 - 2100 Russians, and in 2021 - 199. Due to the influx of Russian citizens, the deadlines for granting a residence permit are delayed, but the average number of permits issued is growing.
RBC also reports that the main way to obtain a residence permit in Argentina from Russians is the so-called "pregnant tourism." The fact is that national legislation allows you to obtain Argentine citizenship shortly after the birth of a child in this country. In particular, in 2022 alone, about 10.5 thousand Russian women waiting for a child arrived in Argentina. In general, the local law provides for 13 categories of applicants for a residence permit: among them are foreign pensioners; persons arriving to study; refugees; people with confirmed permanent income abroad (rentier).[2]

2022: Russians actively move to Argentina to have children
In 2022, Argentina saw a surge in maternity tourism among Russian women. This was largely because it is easier for foreign parents of a child born in this South American country to obtain Argentine citizenship. In particular, all bureaucratic procedures will take less than two years.
According to the head of the consular department of the Russian Embassy in Argentina, Georgy Polin, in 2022, from 2,000 to 2,500 Russian citizens moved to the country, many of whom are pregnant Russians who came to give birth. In 2023, this number may grow to 10 thousand, the diplomat predicts.
According to the head of the agency that provides services to pregnant Russian women abroad, Eva Pekurova, Russian clients choose Buenos Aires because of the high quality of medical care, both private and public,
The founder of the agency Baby.RuArgentina Kirill Makoveev claims that "it got to the point that advertising in Russian appeared in hospitals." His agency alone has provided services to more than 100 Russian women and their partners over the past year, he says.
However, as the newspaper The Guradian notes, it is difficult to find data on how many Russians go to Argentina to give birth there.
After the start of the military operation in Ukraine, Argentina did not join the sanctions against Russia. Argentine President Alberto Fernandez, at a meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, said that Buenos Aires does not support a special operation in Ukraine, but considers it inappropriate to impose sanctions on Russia or its citizens.
Russians can stay in Argentina without visas for no more than 90 days during each period of 180 days. Extending your stay and applying for a residence permit is quite simple, said Eva Pekurova.[3]
