In June 2023, the Russian company, Medgital which is a resident of Skolkovo"," presented a holographic navigation system for surgery. According to the developers, with the help of mixed reality technology, the doctor acquires the ability of X-ray vision and can see all the necessary internal anatomical structures and, based on this, plan his actions during the operation.
Medgital told how their technology works. First, a computed tomography (CT) scan is performed on the patient along with the Medgital recording frame. This is necessary for further determining the position of the patient's head and positioning holograms, the company explains. According to CT data, the doctor segments (highlights) the necessary anatomy elements for visualization in glasses, and also adjusts the method of binding a hologram to a patient.
The next step, the doctor notes the place of access and additional landmarks for further navigation. During the operation, a registration frame is again put on the patient, which has been sterilized. Glasses are put on the operating surgeon and according to the hologram compared with the patient, he analyzes the primary access, and also monitors actions during the procedure. The developers pointed out the following advantages of their system:
- all the necessary information is always in front of the surgeon, there is no need to switch attention to monitors;
- significant savings in operating room space. all it takes are only glasses;
- all navigation elements that contact the patient are sterilizable;
- the hologram can be visualized both in real scale and enlarged;
- precise binding of hologram to patient due to application of Medgital positioning technology.[1]
