Russian EdTech market tripled in 4 years

The volume of Russian educational technologies in 2023 amounted to 118 billion rubles, having more than tripled in comparison with 2019, when the indicator was measured at 35 billion rubles. Experts associated the tangible rise in the Russian market for educational technologies with an increase in the price of training services, as well as with an increase in the number of students. As analysts explain, the creation of educational material is sensitive to changes in wages, since the payment fund accounts for up to 60% of all costs: programmers, methodologists, teachers and other specialists are involved in the process. Market participants attribute the increase in the number of students to the increased desire to change professions or improve their skills in recent years - most of the users want career changes and income growth.


According to the researchers, the Russian EdTech market by 2023 was transformed following the general technological development and expanded in response to the changing needs of the labor market. Those Russians who are interested in employment or changing their profession chose online services in order to obtain skills in demand by employers. Companies, in turn, began to perceive graduates of online schools as full applicants.

Assessing the entire period of development of the EdTech solutions market for 2019-2023, BusinesStat noted that the most strong costs for educational technologies increased in 2021 - by 48%. That rise was associated with the massive introduction of educational technologies to replace the usual processes of offline education with digital remote formats. At the same time, the growth in demand for the services of EdTech companies occurred in all sectors: private, commercial and public, analysts explain.

According to them, against the backdrop of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, educational institutions, including schools, universities and educational centers, were forced to quickly switch to an online format, which provoked massive demand for educational content management systems, digital tools for conducting lessons, testing and evaluating students. In such conditions, Internet platforms were able to increase their share while other educational services became unavailable.

But in 2022, the growth rate of the domestic educational technology market decreased to + 17% due to the departure or suspension of activities in Russia of large foreign companies, as well as uncertainty both in the labor market and in the country as a whole.

In their EdTech market study, BusinesStat analysts included the following segments:

  • educational platforms - educational services provided in an automated or semi-automated format using various simulators, course designers, interactive and gamified tasks;
  • educational process management systems - services for the provision of technical tools and solutions for the provision of educational services. This includes various LMS (Learning Management System), CMS (Content Management System) and other types of solutions;
  • auxiliary educational systems - tools that solve certain problems within the framework of the educational process and are not directly used in the process of providing educational services (educational analytics systems, proctoring, testing systems, digital diaries and journals);

Most of the Russian online education market is occupied by two segments - additional vocational education and children's education. Their share was 35% and 29%, respectively.
