2022: Cyprus froze €105 million of €5.6 billion deposits of Russians
After the outbreak of the conflict in Ukraine, Cyprus froze bank deposits of Russians in the amount of €105 million in 2022, Finance Minister Konstantinos Petridis said in January 2023. In total, €5.6 billion is stored on Russian deposits in Cyprus. Petridis noted that Russian oligarchs who have come under sanctions are under special control, but they usually do not write down assets on themselves.
In total, Cyprus has blocked more than 1.5 billion euros of assets related to Russia, the media reported, citing a speech by Cypriot Finance Minister Konstantinos Petridis.
