2022: Roscosmos sold 74% of the Cosmos airline to the Ministry of Defense for 1 ruble

In early December 2022, it became known about the sale of a 74% stake in Cosmos to a special flight detachment of the Ministry of Defense for 1 ruble. The seller of the asset was Roscosmos, which retained 26% of the air carrier.

The deal was announced by RBC with reference to the general director of the carrier Andrei Pankratov and the press service of Roscosmos. Participants of the transaction explain the reasons of sale of "Space" with "the external economic factors". Pankratov also said that the airline's debts were transferred by the Ministry of Defense (he did not explain how much). According to SPARK-Interafax, the airline's total net loss in 2017-2021. amounted to 676 million rubles.

The transition under the control of the military department will allow updating the Cosmos fleet, where, according to the Federal Air Transport Agency at the end of September, there are only three aircraft: Tu-134 and two Yak-42. By 2023, Pankratov notes, seven aircraft will be added to them: five passenger Tu-204/214 and two cargo Il-76 from the secondary market.

Two RBC sources familiar with the company's plans said that aircraft that were previously operated by Red Wings and Dalavia (a Khabarovsk air carrier that went bankrupt in 2008) are being considered to replenish the fleet. According to Pankratov, the scheme for obtaining aircraft will be determined at the level of the government and the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC). The UAC confirmed that they are discussing the transfer of the Tu-204/214. Cosmos will continue air transportation in the Arctic, including from Arkhangelsk to the Novaya Zemlya archipelago. The airline also remains an aviation operator for the rocket and space industry. Roscosmos also has another carrier - the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center (there are two Tu-204 in the park), which the Federal Air Transport Agency allowed to fly commercially in August 2022.^[1]
