History

The Institute of Catalysis was founded in 1958 as part of the Siberian branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences. The creator and first director of the Institute until 1984 was academician Georgy Konstantinovich Boreskov, an outstanding scientist in the field of catalysis and chemical technology, a major organizer of science. In 1992, the Institute was named after him.

In 1984-1995, the Institute was headed by academician Kirill Ilyich Zamaraev, an outstanding Russian scientist and physico-chemist, a talented teacher.

Since 1995, the Institute has been led by academician Valentin Nikolaevich Parmon.

In 1969, for success in the development of science and the training of highly qualified personnel, the Institute of Catalysis was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor. In 1980, the Institute was awarded the Golden Mercury International Prize for its contribution to international cooperation. In 1994, by a resolution of the Government of the Russian Federation, the Institute of Catalysis was granted the status of the State Scientific Center of the Russian Federation.

For 2005, the G.K. Boreskova Institute of Catalysis SB RAS is one of the world's largest research centers in the field of catalysis. The Institute has branches in St. Petersburg and Volgograd. The staff of the Institute is about 1000 people, including more than 350 researchers.

2020: Self-cleaning fabrics for the production of protective suits and masks have been created in Russia

April 13, 2020 it became known about the creation in Russia of self-cleaning fabric for the production of medical protective suits and masks. This is the development of the Federal Research Center Institute of Catalysis of the Siberian Branch (FIC IC SB) of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Self-cleaning tissue materials are treated with titanium nanoparticles, Olga Dorokhova, executive secretary of the working group of the SB RAS to overcome the crisis associated with the spread of coronavirus, told TASS.

It became known about the creation in Russia of self-cleaning fabric for the production of medical protective suits and masks

According to her, both cotton and polypropylene materials, which are treated with nanocrystals and nanoparticles, are suitable for the production of photoactive materials according to the developed TiO2. The approach makes it possible to obtain washing-resistant and time-stable self-cleaning textile materials from viruses and bacteria.

The fabric is cleaned at night using ultraviolet radiation and can be used to manufacture personal protective equipment for hospital staff and laboratory assistants who fight the COVID-19 coronavirus "on the front line."

Scientists of the SB RAS sent their new developments for consideration to Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin. The first package of proposals included a project for the production of self-cleaning medical masks, as well as an RNA vaccine that reduces the pathogenicity of coronavirus infection.

The second package of proposals of the SB RAS for accelerated introduction into the industry includes self-cleaning photoactive tissue materials from viruses and bacteria, which can be used to produce protective suits for doctors.

The fact that doctors in Russia lack masks and other means of protection from infections was previously said by the Minister of Industry and Trade Denis Manturov and the Commissioner for Human Rights in the Russian Federation Tatyana Moskalkova.

Goals and objectives

The Institute's field of work extends from solving fundamental problems in the field of catalysis to the creation of new catalysts, catalytic technologies and experimental production of catalysts.

In accordance with the Charter of the IC SB RAS, the main goal of the Institute is to carry out basic scientific research and applied development in the following main areas:

  • The scientific foundations of catalysis and the creation of high-efficiency, selective catalysts and catalytic systems;
  • Creation of a single theory of homogeneous, heterogeneous and enzymatic catalysis; anticipation of catalytic action;
  • Development of the theory and scientific foundations of catalyst preparation;
  • Research in the field of kinetics of catalytic processes;
  • Development of theoretical foundations of chemical technology;
  • Development of catalysts and catalytic processes for new applications.

The main activities of the Institute include:

  • Scientific (research) activities aimed at obtaining and applying new knowledge;
  • Scientific and technical activities aimed at obtaining and applying new knowledge to solve technological, engineering problems;
  • Research and training activities for the training of highly qualified personnel;
  • Innovative activities aimed at introducing new ideas, scientific knowledge, technologies and products into various fields of production;
  • Infrastructure support activities, including information, metrological, material and technical and other support of the main activity.

The main area of ​ ​ scientific activity of the Institute is the establishment of general physicochemical laws of catalysis, the creation of scientific foundations for the molecular design of substances and materials, the development of theoretical foundations for the implementation of catalytic processes, the creation of a new generation of high-efficiency catalysts for basic chemical, oil refining and petrochemical industries, as well as the creation of catalysts and technologies for new applications. Fundamental research is aimed primarily at solving the issues of anticipation of catalytic action, developing a technological basis for the preparation and production of catalysts, as well as at the development and optimization of catalytic processes. Among the basic studies of the Institute can be distinguished:

  • investigation of the phenomenon of atomic-molecular catalysis;
  • study of the nature of catalyst active centres and mechanisms of key catalytic reactions;
  • study of catalyst structure and mechanisms of their formation;
  • kinetic research and mathematical modeling of catalytic processes.

The institute's laboratories are equipped with unique scientific equipment that allows a comprehensive study of the chemical composition and properties of catalysts, study the mechanisms of catalytic reactions and create new effective catalysts for various branches of the chemical industry.

Applied research at the Institute of Catalysis is carried out within the framework of the most important federal programs of state importance and is aimed at solving specific practically important problems. The Institute is a regular participant in large international and Russian projects, has partnerships with a large number of firms and factories in Russia and abroad. The Institute has created and mastered more than 50 catalysts and catalytic technologies in various fields of industry. The Institute's developments were often marked by high awards and diplomas in prestigious forums and exhibitions.

Every year, more than 300 publications in peer-reviewed publications, more than three dozen patents are published from the walls of the Institute. Over the past five years, the Institute has received 180 security documents in Russia; Currently, 30 foreign patents are supported.

For 2012, the Institute is under the partial scientific and methodological guidance of the Joint Scientific Council of the SB RAS on Chemical Sciences, as well as the Joint Scientific Council of the SB RAS on Nanotechnology and Information Technologies. "
