2022: Hotel network IT systems fail after massive cyber attack

In early September 2022, the IT systems of the large hotel chain InterContinental Hotels Group, which manages 17 hotel brands around the world, were hacked, which led to a constant disruption of online booking systems and other services of the corporation.

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG), which is headquartered in England and has offices in Atlanta, Singapore and Shanghai, said London in a stock market statement that some of its technology systems had been subject to unauthorized acts. The company went on to say that its operations had been disrupted since September 5, 2022, leaving people struggling, especially with booking through. Internet

InterContinental hotel network IT systems fail after massive cyber attack

The company operates 6,028 hotels and 882,897 rooms in more than 100 countries. IHG has about 325 thousand employees, and its brands include Regent, InterContinental Hotels and Resorts, Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn Express, Candlewood Suites, Atwell Suites and Even Hotels.

IHG officials said they were setting in motion their response plans, as well as notifying authorities of the intrusion and working with their technology providers. In addition, experts from non-third-party companies are involved in helping in the investigation.

Attempts by a journalist from The Register to book a room online through the IHG website were unsuccessful, as he repeatedly stumbled upon a message that the requested page was not responding. When clicking on links to other pages on the website, the same message appeared, although some pages opened after several minutes of delay.

IHG posted a message to guests at the top of the homepage informing them that as of September 10, 2022, customers may have trouble booking new rooms, accessing information about upcoming bookings, and accessing your IHG One Rewards account. The company is working to resolve the issues as soon as possible and is inviting customers with questions to call the hotel directly, the report said.

IHG did not say whether the attack was the result of a ransomware virus or some other malware. Threat analysis company Hudson Rock said on its social page that at least 15 employees of the company and 4,030 users of the internal network were compromised, according to information obtained from the ihg.com website.[1]
