The Ministry of Regional Development of the Russian Federation till September, 2014 was the federal executive authority performing functions on development of state policy and legal regulation:

  • in the field of social and economic development of territorial subjects of the Russian Federation,
  • federal and national relations,
  • differentiations of powers in objects of joint maintaining the Russian Federation and territorial subjects of the Russian Federation,
  • local government,
  • implementation of border cooperation,
  • development of the region of the Far North and Arctic,
  • protection of the rights of ethnic minorities, primordial habitat and traditional way of life of indigenous ethnic groups and ethnic communities.

History

The ministry of regional development existed since 2004.

In September, 2014 the President Russia Vladimir Putin signed the decree abolishing the Ministry of Regional Development of the Russian Federation.

Part of powers of the Ministry of Regional Development is transferred to the Ministry of Economic Development, the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Construction and Housing and Communal Services.

Earlier liquidation of department was proposed by the Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev. The head of the government Medvedev explained that recently the separate ministries of affairs of the Crimea, development of the Far East and the North Caucasus were created. According to the prime minister, further work of the Ministry of Regional Development is inexpedient because "a considerable part of competence of the ministry of regional development appeared a razverstana between the new ministries".
