The Federal State Budgetary Institution "National Medical Research Center of Oncology named after N.N. Petrov" (National Medical Research Center of Oncology) of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation is one of the largest federal scientific and medical centers in Russia, providing specialized, including high-tech medical care at the level of world standards. The research activities of the center are aimed at developing methods for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

The Institute of Oncology was established in Leningrad on March 15, 1927. In 2017, the institution received the status of the National Medical Research Center of Oncology and is today considered one of the oldest medical institutions in the Northwest. The center proudly bears the name of its founder, the founder of Russian oncology Nikolai Nikolaevich Petrov. Over the years of work, a unique Russian scientific school has developed here, giving the world such outstanding scientists as S.A. Kholdin, L.M. Shabad, A.I. Rakov, A.I. Serebrov, N.P. Napalkov, M.L. Gershanovich, V.N. Anisimov, V.F. Semiglazov and others.

The institution has 17 scientific departments, 20 clinical departments, 16 auxiliary clinical departments, 3 outpatient and diagnostic departments.

History

2024:170 metastases from the patient's lungs were removed by St. Petersburg oncologists - this is a world record

Doctors of the N.N. Petrov National Medical Research Center of Oncology in St. Petersburg set a world record by removing 170 metastases from the patient's lungs. The press service of the medical center announced this at the end of March 2024.

The patient was 37-year-old Vyacheslav from Moscow, who was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in 2020. He underwent chemotherapy and was treated in Germany, but local surgeons removed only 10-15 metastases in one operation. Oncologist surgeon Evgeny Levchenko from N.N. Petrov National Medical Research Center of Oncology agreed to remove all tumors.

The first three operations were carried out according to the patented method of the Petrov National Medical Research Center of Oncology - by the method of isolated chemoperfusion. In this case, surgeons "disconnect" the lung from the general circulation and create local circulation with the circulation of a high dose of chemopreparations in order to destroy still unrealized metastases. The organ is then washed from the cytostatic and "connected" to the general circulation.

The National Medical Research Center is forced to state that despite the positive forecasts of doctors, Vyacheslav will no longer be able to return to his previous life: after the operations, the indicators of respiratory function are 57% of the norm and will no longer recover to 100%. 2023: Construction of the Petrov National Medical Research Center for Pediatric Oncology and Oncohematology in St. Petersburg for 1.7 billion rubles

In June 2023, the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation issued a positive conclusion for the construction of the Center for Pediatric Oncology and Oncohematology of the Petrov National Medical Research Center. 1.7 billion rubles are being invested in this project, which is being implemented by the N.N. 2022: The first endoprosthetics in Russia with a combination of 3D printing and a modular prosthesis

In March 2022, for the first time in Russia, endoprosthetics was carried out with a combination of 3D printing and a modular prosthesis. The operation took place at the N.N. Petrov National Medical Research Center of Oncology.

According to the press service of this institution, surgeons operated on a 34-year-old patient diagnosed with femoral chondrosarcoma. Doctors retained the knee joint, using a combination of modular endoprosthesis and individual (3D-printing). No one has previously used such a mechanism in Russia.

Chondrosarcomas can affect any skeletal bone, but the predominant localization of the tumor is the pelvic bone and femur. With a far-advanced tumor process, a complete amputation of the limb is required. Doctors of the N.N. Petrov National Medical Research Center of Oncology have found a solution thanks to which exarticulation can be avoided - the isolation of the leg from the pelvis.

In our patient, chondrosarcoma was as widespread as possible in the femur, went to the hip joint and went down in soft tissues to the knee joint, in addition, squeezed the femoral artery and vein - says Grigory Vladimirovich Zinoviev, head of the surgical department of bone tumors, soft tissues and skin of the National Medical Research Center. - One of the main problems was that the tumor reached the distal femur. Therefore, it was decided to remove almost the entire femur with a tumor and a hip joint, but try to preserve the knee joint by using a combination of a modular endoprosthesis and an individual (3D-printed) made specifically for the patient. Complete amputation of leg as possible outcome of surgery was not considered or suspected.

To install a standard modular design, bioengineers printed part of the prosthesis on a 3D printer, in another part they used modular factory components, a kind of designer turned out.[2]

2020: Construction of a new building

The N. N. Petrov National Medical Research Center for Oncology will build a new building and spend more than 5.2 billion rubles on it. The institution announced this on October 14, 2020.

According to TASS in the press service of the N.N. Petrov, the new building should work by 2024, after which the number of beds in the center will increase one and a half times to 609, and the number of operating rooms - twice (up to 16).

The new clinical building is a seven-story single building with an area of ​ ​ 32.1 thousand square meters. meters. It will be located on the main site of the center in the Kurortny district of St. Petersburg. A 204-bed hospital will be opened in the building, where high-tech, mainly surgical care will be provided. The hospital will include, among other things, a bone marrow transplantation unit, a resuscitation and intensive care unit, an operating unit, and a blood transfusion unit.

At the N.N. Petrov National Medical Research Center is building a clinical building for 5.2 billion rubles

It is expected that the construction and reconstruction of the Center for Oncology named after N.N. Petrov will make it possible to fill the shortage of modern diagnostic and therapeutic technologies both for the North-West Federal District and for the whole of Russia.

The development plan of the National Medical Research Center also provides for the design and construction of a center for pediatric oncology and hematology, a center for nuclear medicine and radiation therapy, a center for preclinical research, an educational complex and a boarding house to accommodate visiting patients, their relatives, as well as students.

Earlier, the Government of the Russian Federation allocated 5.61 billion rubles for the "design, construction and reconstruction" of the clinical building of the National Medical Research Center, the draft of this document was developed in April 2019. The cost of designing the building has already amounted to more than 150 million rubles.

Since October 12, 2020, the Unified Procurement Information System has also hosted an auction from the Directorate of a single customer-developer of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation to choose a contractor for the first stage of construction and installation work. The initial maximum contract price is 2.52 billion rubles.[3]
