2022: Novatek began to create an LNG plant on Russian equipment

At the end of May 2022, Novatek began pre-project work on the construction of a natural gas liquefaction (LNG) plant, which will be located on the basis of the Ob Gas Chemical Complex. It is claimed that Russian production equipment will be used at this enterprise.

Now we will do the project... in order to place two lines on the GBS (gravity-type bases - approx. TAdviser), which we produce in Murmansk. So that this production is 5 million tons, - said the chairman of the board of Novatek Leonid Mikhelson to reporters in Tyumen.

According to him, the company has already tested its own liquefaction technology, and it has proven its effectiveness.

They made a pilot plant, a small, slightly less than 1 million tons of LNG production. But they received a lot of headaches - about a year, but it is now working, completely made on Russian equipment, "Mikhelson said at the end of May 2022.

In April 2022, the EU imposed the first sanctions against the Russian gas industry, banning the supply of key equipment for the production of liquefied gas. Russia traditionally purchased the bulk of equipment for large-tonnage liquefaction in "unfriendly" countries. These restrictions do not apply to the supply of gas turbines to the Russian Federation, but their foreign manufacturers can no longer conclude new contracts with Russian companies.

Earlier, the company abandoned the idea of building Obsky LNG, which was based on Russian gas liquefaction technology. Leonid Mikhelson said that the company is dissatisfied with the work of the fourth line of Yamal LNG, the first in the country created using this Russian technology. It was reported that instead of Obsky LNG, the Obsky GKH gas chemical project will be implemented[1]
