On account of Russian Oracle engineers tens of millions of lines of program code, development in ten technological areas, more than a dozen created products that received international patents, a tenth of the team has scientific degrees. About 300 employees work at the Oracle development center in St. Petersburg, which the company got after acquiring Sun in 2010[1]?

Programmers do not report to the Moscow commercial office headed by [[Person: Lanovenko_Valery_Yuryevich 'Valery Lanovenko], are not a profit center, and report to managers on their vertical, closing from above on Executive Vice President Thomas Kurian, who oversees the development. The center is part of the global division of Oracle Product Development.

In 2006, the active development of the Russian Java community began. The development center took the initiative to hold events for Russian developers on Java, which received support from the headquarters. The first JavaOne conference attracted more than 1000 participants and became one of the largest technology conferences in Europe. For ten years, educational meetings of the Center were attended by about 20,000 people. And the Development Center has become the initiating and guiding force in the formation, expansion and development of the Java community in all CIS countries. Java Days seminars are held in many cities of Russia and the CIS, such as Vladimir, Voronezh, Irkutsk, Kazan, Moscow, Novosibirsk, St. Petersburg, Samara, Kyiv, Lviv, Minsk, as well as in Riga (Latvia). The first Java 8 webinar in June 2014, which was joined by 500 listeners, also confirmed the repeated increase in interest in Java technologies.

Since 2011, the Development Center has been operating under the Oracle brand, while retaining the main team and, over time, strengthening the team, and expanding the development spectrum with new Oracle products, primarily from the Oracle Fusion Middleware family of binding technologies. In the same period, at the initiative of the Development Center and Oracle Academy, the Java programming Olympiad among university students started. To date, more than 62,000 students from 400 universities in Russia and the CIS have taken part in them, with an increase in the number of participants over the past year of 45%.

Over the decade, Oracle's annual investment in development and research has grown from $1.3 billion to $5 billion and in total exceeded $29 billion. One of the most important results of Oracle's investment was the release in March 2014 of Java 8, the most significant in 15 years.

Engineers of the St. Petersburg Center made up about a third of the group of programmers who worked on Java 8. The Russian team was responsible entirely for Java ME and for part of Java SE, including new and old graphics libraries (AWT, SWING, J2D, JavaFX), for the performance of the new platform, for the quality of Java 8 in general. The center is working on the release of a product such as JCK - Java Compatibility Kit. This is a necessary module in the Java world that allows you to certify various implementations of the Java standard, although it is not formally part of the platform. In addition, great attention was paid to security in the new platform. And in this task, Russian developers were in one of the key roles.

The Center is involved in the development of many Oracle product areas. The main focus is Java, as well as Oracle Fusion Middleware and Oracle Linux. Work is underway on Oracle Solaris Studio, which includes C, C++ and Fortran compilers for Solaris OS. The Center's programmers deal with Oracle SOA Suite integration technologies, Oracle VM and VirtualBox virtualization products, as well as JDeveloper and MySQL.

The Oracle Development Center in St. Petersburg contributes to the development of the Internet of Things, a concept that faces a great future. Such a direction as Java ME Embedded, used for programming built-in systems such as SIM cards, mobile phones, GPS receivers, smart homes, is fully implemented in St. Petersburg.

Key competencies possessed by the Sun development center were retained. In addition to Java, it is a developer package for Oracle Solaris Studio, which includes C, C++ and Fortran compilers for OS Solaris, Oracle Linux and Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). It is engaged in the second largest group of programmers of the center.

As for database management systems (), DBMS for the MySQL fate of which the community of users was primarily worried after the Sun-Oracle deal, literally a dozen developers are engaged in it.

In addition to the Sun legacy, the Oracle development center in St. Petersburg over the past three-plus years has received tasks related to the software of the new parent company. Labzovsky programmers are engaged in intermediate software between system and business applications Fusion Middleware, Oracle Linux OS, and virtualization software Oracle VM and VirtualBox.

The center does not conduct commercial activities and completely exists at the expense of the parent corporation. The scale of the costs for it is not called. About 90% of them are in the payroll fund, which is typical of a development company. Also, investments were aimed at creating a data center located here in the office in St. Petersburg. It is used only for the needs of its own programmers.
