History

2021: Construction of the center

On December 9, 2021, an agreement was announced between Rosatom and the Serbian government. The treaty envisages the construction of a nuclear technology center in this country, which within three years will include nuclear medicine projects based on the cyclotron complex, as well as facilities for the production of radiopharmaceuticals.

It is noted that the new center will use advanced technologies, such as the production of radioisotopes for medical and industrial purposes, the production of doped silicon for industry, the provision of services for determining the elemental composition of ores and minerals, environmental samples.

The radiopharmaceutical complex and the center of nuclear medicine will provide access to high-tech medical care to citizens of Serbia, aimed primarily at resolving issues in the fight against cancer, said Rosatom Director General Alexei Likhachev, whose words are quoted by the press service of the state corporation.

The president of RuSat Overseas (an enterprise of the state corporation Rosatom) Yevgeny Pakermanov said that the start of work on the practical implementation of the project is scheduled for 2022.

Serbian Government Minister and Chairman of the Intergovernmental Committee for Cooperation with Russia Nenad Popovich, commenting on the deal, called it historically important. It will return Serbia to the map of European countries with capacities for scientific research in the field of nuclear technologies, he stressed.

Earlier, during the official visit of the President Russia Vladimir Putin to Serbia, an intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in the field of the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes was signed, as well as a joint statement on strategic partnership for the construction of the Center for Nuclear Science, Technology and Innovation.^[1]
