2019: Creation of institute

On March 18, 2019 Stanford University with assistance of the best specialists of the technology industry opened cross-disciplinary research institute to study how the artificial intelligence will influence society and also to find new methods of application of AI.

The Stanford institute of the artificial intelligence focused on the person (Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence, HAI), was headed by professor John Etchemendy and the outstanding researcher of machine learning Fei-Fei Li who teaches at faculty of information science. Recently it finished a two-year training as the chief researcher of AI in Google.

Such known names helped institute to attract influential sponsors. The advisory board of the center Hoffman (Reid Hoffman) and the head of research laboratory Microsoft Eric Horvitz includes eminent persons of the industry of technologies, such as chairman of the board of Google Eric Schmidt, cofounder of LinkedIn Read.

HAI should become the center where scientists from different areas will be able to study in cooperation the AI applications in the specific areas of researches. According to the representative of the university, 200 teachers representing all seven schools of Stanford will get to work at institute. Within the activity HAI will host the academic meetings and to conduct artificial intelligence courses with cross-disciplinary orientation for students of Stanford University. The institute will also provide grants to the scientists dealing with issues AI.

HAI already selected financing for 50 research projects. In one of them potential influence of unmanned vehicles on society, in another – use of AI for development of a neurobiology will be studied. Stanford University is going to attract more than $1 billion[1] to financing of HAI]
