2023: Termination of 2.1 thousand employees

At the end of April 2023, the largest British grocery retailer Tesco announced a restructuring, which will lay off about 2.1 thousand employees in Britain and Ireland. The company also began to close stores due to the crisis in Britain.

According to the chain's management, the Tesco concept implied the opening of full-fledged supermarkets, but as of February 2, 2023, 70% of visitors perceive them as "at home" stores. Tesco customers shop one day and with a small cheque. This requires reforming the concept of the grocery retailer, and changes are planned such:

  • Maximum overstocking of the trading floor with minimization of the volume of goods in the warehouse;

  • More flexible regulations on the areas of responsibility of employees of the trading floor so that they are always on the pick-up in the right place at the right time;

  • Transition to linear management.

These are difficult decisions, but they are necessary to ensure that we remain focused on delivering value to our customers wherever possible, and to ensure that our in-store offering reflects what our customers value most. Our first priority is to support colleagues who have been affected, "Tesco UK and ROI CEO Jason Tarry said.

In total, more than 340 thousand people work in the Tesco network as of February 2023, so that layoffs nationwide will amount to about 1.5% of the total number of employees. At the same time, 1.8 thousand new positions of shift managers will be introduced in stores. The restructuring will affect all of the company's major supermarkets and Tesco Extra stores.

Tesco will close the remaining counters and hot delicacies in stores on February 26, 2023, which will affect 2.1 thousand jobs already available, an unknown number of workers. All affected workers will be offered alternative positions, the company said.[1]
