Comparison of the IaaS-solution UCS Director and HPE OneView

HPE OneView is means of infrastructure management for deployment and configuring of a set of the products HPE. A number of significant improvements is entered to the latest version. At the same time, as stated on the HPE OneView web page, the product only provides "a way to implementation of infrastructure as services". And it becomes obvious if to look at functionality of OneView for orchestration, independent configuring and use of API (see tab. 1).

Most the IT organizations are going to provide a considerable part of functionality of the IaaS-solution to end users. They need the ample opportunities allowing to configure infrastructure and to manage it irrespective of the producer of the hardware. Cisco UCS Director provides IaaS support with a broad spectrum of the equipment both Cisco, and third-party companies. The main appointment of HPE OneView — to provide management for a certain number of the products HPE. In tab. 2 possibilities of configuring and management of UCS Director and HPE OneView for products of different producers are compared.

UCS Director supports various types of infrastructure of different vendors. To create extensive functionality of IaaS, the Cisco company formed partnership and took part in joint developments with many vendors. Tasks and work flows for automation of configuring of all levels of hardware infrastructure, including calculations, network functionality and storage systems are created. There is a possibility of configuring of equipment rooms (bare-metal) of servers, adding of levels of virtualization and usual operating systems. Also configuring of virtual and object (object-based) configurations of storage systems is supported.

HPE OneView is not OpenView

It is not necessary to confuse HPE OneView and a monitoring system of HP OpenView which HPE purchased a few years ago. OpenView was developed as open system (what tells also its name about) and supports not only HPE, but also different servers and network devices of the third-party companies. The HPE OneView system is intended for management of the limited nomenclature of the equipment of HPE. It provides a part of the HPE portfolio including servers, DWH and products of convergent infrastructure. From products of third-party companies OneView supports only the Brocade and Cisco switches.

When your organization, passing to a hybrid cloud, begins to estimate solutions of management IaaS, I strongly recommend to consider advantages of UCS Director. 2015: There was an updating of the HPE OneView 2.0 platform

On June 24, 2015 the Hewlett-Packard company provided HP OneView 2.0 in which abilities to manage are implemented by software-defined infrastructure.

HPE OneView 2.0 helps to save time spent for management and to reduce the probability of expensive errors due to control automation by a server framework. New templates of profiles of servers allow not only to define the LAN and SAN settings of connections, but also to set basis of versions of microprogram providing and drivers. Any changes of templates of profiles are applied to several or many servers at once that considerably increases convenience of management during all service life of systems. Besides, thanks to mobility of profiles it is possible to transfer workloads between different platforms.

HPE OneView 2.0 provides possibilities of automatic control and anticipatory monitoring for SAN networks. Administrators can reveal and fix the potential problems connected with SAN networks before they influence business processes. Automatic control of arrays of 3PAR StoreServ is supported at connection under the FCoE protocol in addition to traditional Fiber Channel that is important for the organizations using convergent networks. HPE OneView beforehand reveals zoning errors, the damaged ways and the disconnected volumes in SAN network and provides recommendations about optimization of settings of networks and servers.

Users of HPE OneView will be able to combine management of physical infrastructure by means of HPE OneView with control of virtual machines by HP of Virtualization Performance Viewer (vPV).

This combination will allow to plan deployment of new applications and to minimize influence of transactions of maintenance, thanks to identification of distribution of clusters of virtualization by HP BladeSystem infrastructure.

2014

HPE OneView updating

On June 10, 2014 submitted to HP the updated OneView HP platform which allows to implement approach to management of DPC as program-controlled structure.

The new version of HP OneView expands abilities to manage of DWH of HP 3PAR and allows to create flexible pools of resources of storage.

As a part of new HP OneView the built-in HP solution of ConvergedSystem for Virtualization - it offers a single platform of control of servers, DWH, network resources and software of third-party developers. This solution is deployed in 20 days and helps to automate management of the IT environment.

The improved ConvergedSystem for Virtualization HP platform is available: the starting price - $170 thousand.

The improved solution HPE OneView is also available: the starting price - $699.

Updating of the version of HPE OneView

On December 3, 2014 HP announced an exit of upgraded version of HPE OneView.

In the new version of HP OneView helps to optimize IT transactions and to increase automation level, improving efficiency of IT personnel of customers.

Control panel infrastructure of HP OneView and automation of all systems of calculations, data storage and networks considerably reduce complexity of management, providing providing IaaS services in several clicks by "mouse".

The product combines simplicity of management of IT infrastructure and possibilities of predictive analytics. As a part of the latest version of a system the built-in component of HP Operations Analytics providing to customers of means for forecasting, prevention and hands-off processing of problems before their emergence contains. When using HP of Operations Analytics the speed of the problem resolution increases (30 minutes instead of 3 days - developers noted) that helps to save time and means, raising the service level.

Development

The version of OneView 1.0 worked only about HP BladeSystem blade systems, Virtual Connect using corporate technology of a virutalization of network connections for which originally and the mechanism of server profiles was developed. At the beginning of summer of 2014 there was version 1.1 of this solution with considerably advanced functionality. One of the main improvements of this version — support of storage systems of HP 3PAR of StoreServ that allows to automate using OneView deployment of these disk arrays and setup of zones of networks of storage of SAN for them and also "connect" volumes of the data which are stored on StoreServ HP 3PAR with server profiles. Besides, in version 1.1 support of HP BladeSystem which are not using Virtual Connect, rack servers of a series of HP ProLiant DL Gen8 and SAN networks on the basis of the Fibre Channel is implemented and also monitoring of the Cisco switches Nexus 5000 with the connected modules FEX B22HP is implemented.

OneView 1.2 implements management of the let-out ninth generation of HP of ProLiant Gen9, monitoring for the previous sixth and seventh (G6 and G7) generation of these servers. The structure of the solution for convenience of users includes the configured control panels (dashboards) and procurements of status reports on a system and inventories of the equipment and also function of the pro-active notification by e-mail.

HP OneView application accelerates development and deployment of a server framework on the basis of a multinodal cluster six times, allows to execute only four transactions instead of 480 for search and failure handling in network and also by 24 times reduces duration of the procedure of configuration change of network connections.

In future versions of this solution it is going to apply management at the system level to the convergent systems of HP of Converged System 300 and 700, automatic update of a microcode and drivers of servers, support of storage systems when using network connections of Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) and an opportunity using one console to exercise global control of the equipment, set in different DPCs.

HPE OneView

On September 25, 2013 the Hewlett-Packard company announced a release of the solution HPE OneView.

Specific Features

The company claims - saving of time for accomplishment of typical transactions when using OneView is considerable. Data are provided that deployment of hypervisors on 16 servers which usually takes several hours using OneView is reduced many times.

As a part of the solution the mechanism of creation of the interactive map of infrastructure of DPC which reflects a status of servers, their physical and logical interrelations is implemented. The software package allows to integrate servers in groups, and when adding to group of new servers they will be automatically configured according to the others. The solution helps to update at the same time firmwares of many servers, to find specific servers on MAC addresses and other unique identifiers.

OneView interacts only with HP servers, but the program interface on the basis of REST is provided in a system, it will allow to connect it with other programs for infrastructure management.


Perspectives and plans of software

Over time the company is going to implement support of HP of Moonshot Arm and other servers.
