Codec
The codec (from engl. codec - in abbreviated form from coder/decoder (encoder / dekodirovshchik) or compressor/decompressor (compressor / decompressor)) - the device or the program which is capable to execute conversion of a flow of video or audio of data or a signal. Codecs can how to code a flow / signal (usually for storage, transfer or enciphering), and to decode or decode - i.e. for viewing or change in a format more suitable for these transactions. Codecs are often used at digital processing of video and audio of a sound.
The majority of codecs for audio and video of data uses lossy compression to receive the reduced size of ready (already compressed) file. There are also codecs squeezing without loss (lossless codecs), but for the majority of applications, hardly noticeable improvement of quality does not justify significant increase in volume of the received files. The only exception - a situation when data are exposed to further processing: in this case the repeating losses on coding / decoding will have a serious impact on quality.
