Ethylene oxide

.

2021: More than 7 thousand food items in the EU are withdrawn from sale due to the presence of ethylene oxide

In mid-2021, many Europeans struggle to find some products in stores, such as sesame seeds in Spain or hamburger buns in France. The reason is that many products, more than 7,000, were removed from the European market due to the presence of ethylene oxide, a toxic substance that is forbidden to be eaten.

In particular, on June 24, AESAN (Spanish Food Safety and Nutrition Agency) reported the presence of ethylene oxide residues in the food additive (carrot gum, E410). Later, the substance was found in a variety of products consumed in large quantities.

Since the beginning of summer 2021, many varieties of ice cream have been removed from Spanish supermarkets due to the risk of ethylene oxide contamination.

But the problem extends to a much wider range, affecting fruits, seeds, legumes, seasonings or supplements.
