NMT is the first standard of mobile communication

Thirty years ago, the first serious step on the way of development of mobile communication around the world was taken on October 1, 1981. This day in Sweden the Europe's first mobile network on the basis of the standard of analog mobile communication of NMT, or Nordic Mobile Telephony was started. Though the NMT standard was developed in Sweden, it became the first really open and multi-national standard of mobile communication covering many countries and continents. Today bulky NMT phones look a little unusually. Those years his creators could hardly provide that this standard will make this revolution in the field of mobile communication and will become a starting point of development of mobile telephony worldwide.

The NMT standard was created at the end of the 70th, started in 1981, and in 2007 the Sweden's last NMT network was closed. The internal prefix "010" entered for designation of a mobile network is still used in corporate automatic telephone exchanges including in Ericsson company. In Russia the last networks working at NMT-450 basis were closed on September 1, 2006 by Uralvestkom operator and on January 10, 2008 Sibirtelecom operator. Nevertheless, NMT became the first standard of mobile communication in Russia. On September 9, 1991 on NMT network of Delta Telecom operator the Russia's first mobile call took place.

The Televerket company later renamed into Telia Company (before TeliaSonera) Sonera, played a key role in creation and distribution of NMT, and Ericsson acted as key solution provider on the basis of this standard. Today both companies are not only market leaders, but also recognized leaders of the innovative development in the areas. Ericsson and TeliaSonera through joint efforts started the first-ever commercial 4G network in Stockholm and continue to develop the technologies connecting society actively.

Håkan Dahlström, the president of division of mobile company services of TeliaSonera, said: "The NMT standard became this break, he presented us essentially new opportunity - mobile communication. Communication which we created paved the way to the GSM standard and all modern telecommunication technologies which more than 5 billion people around the world use now. It is break of which it was only possible to dream".
Johan Vayberg, the head of global division of Network added Ericsson company: "We went a long way. Today mobile communication means to each of us much more, it is an integral part of everyday life of huge number of people around the world".
"Our vision of the technologies connecting society assumes that people, the companies and society can get powerful benefits from use of the devices connected to network. Their number, according to the forecast of Ericsson, by 2020 will make over 50 billion. In far 1981 it could not even be provided. We are very glad that very soon we will be able to become witnesses of the birth of absolutely new technologies", - Vayberg concluded.
