The basis of the scientific concept of the Mining Institute of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (GI UrO RAS) is a comprehensive study of the patterns of development of parameters of geosystems and optimal management of them when natural and anthropogenic factors affect the subsoil.

As of July 2019, as part of the implementation of the declared concept, the institute is conducting research in the following fundamental areas:

  • Development of scientific foundations of rational subsoil use in the development of strategic georesources and underground spaces in areas of large urban industrial agglomerations.
  • Creation of scientific and methodological foundations for monitoring geosystems and study of patterns of their spatial and temporal transformation in the process of subsoil development.

History

2023: Obtaining 2.5 billion rubles for the creation of nuclear fuel reprocessing technology

The Institute of Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (abbreviated as IVTE URO RAS) received 2.5 billion rubles for the creation of nuclear fuel processing technology. The scientific director of the institution, Yuri Zaikov, announced this in June 2023.

IVTE Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences received 2.5 billion rubles for the creation of nuclear fuel processing technology

The agreement provides for the creation of technology for the processing of spent nuclear fuel of fast neutron reactors (SNF RBN). The contract is concluded until 2026. It is assumed that the developed technology will allow closing the nuclear fuel cycle as a result of the creation of a two-component nuclear power. The funds received by the institute will allow designing a site for the development of technology at the site of the processing module of the pilot demonstration energy complex (JSC SKHK, Seversk).

Spent nuclear fuel is fuel elements extracted from the core (FE) or their groups, fuel assemblies of nuclear reactors of nuclear power plants and other installations (research, transport and others). Fuel is classified as spent if it is more unable to support the chain reaction effectively.

Prior to the development in Russia of the current technology for the use of spent nuclear fuel in fast neutron reactors, it was believed that the practical value of SNF is small and it creates problems with utilization and storage, but this type of reactor allows the use of the energy potential of spent nuclear fuel, providing humanity with a source of energy for hundreds of years.[1]

GI UrO RAS was created in accordance with the resolution of the Central Committee of the CPSU and the Council of Ministers of the USSR of September 26, 1987 No. 1088, the resolution of the Presidium of the USSR Academy of Sciences of May 19, 1987 No. 274, the resolution of the Presidium of the Ural Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences of February 1, 1988.
