From 1964 to 1973 was the research associate of Institute of medical radiology of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences in Obninsk, in 1973-1982 held a position of the senior research associate of Institute of experimental and clinical oncology of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences in Moscow.
Till 1988 Ivan Dedov taught at the First medical institute of I.M. Sechenov, and then the Endocrinological scientific center Russian Academy of Medical Science headed eight years.
From 2006 to 2008 Ivan Dedov was the head of the Federal agency on hi-tech medical care. It was dismissed in connection with abolition of the agency. Afterwards held a position of a direktorom of Endocrinological scientific center of the Ministry of Health. On March 1, 2011 it was elected the president of the Russian Academy of Medical Science.
