Carney and his elder brother Dan began to be engaged in pizza in 1958 when both studied at the State university of Wichita. For $600 provided to them by their mother two brothers opened the first pizzeria of Pizza Hut. Such name, according to the official statement of Pizza Hut, received an institution because "on their sign there was a place only for eight letters".

Developing the business, Carney's brothers finally sold Pizza Hut of PepsiCo company for $300 million in 1977 though later Dan claimed that his younger brother probably "lost the most part of what he made in Pizza Hut", being engaged in other entrepreneurial projects, including the real estate, oil, gas, automotive industry and many other things.
