2022: 3.5-year sentence for social media comments

On October 3, 2022, the Gomel Regional Court sentenced 38-year-old Epam programmer Sergei Kiriyenko. He was accused under three articles of the Criminal Code of Belarus: Part 1 of Art. 130 (inciting social hostility or hatred), Art. 369 (insulting a government official), Art. 368 (insulting the President of Belarus).

Sergei Kiriyenko was sentenced to 3.5 years in a general regime colony. The content of the IT specialist in the pre-trial detention center during the year will be counted when serving the appointed term.

Sergei Kiriyenko was detained in early October 2021 for commenting on social networks on a video about the assault on the apartment of Epam employee Andrei Seltzer.

According to the KGB, the security forces carried out a special operation in one of the houses of Minsk "to work out the addresses in which the persons involved in terrorist activities could be."

Andrei Seltzer lived in an apartment with his 40-year-old wife and child. According to the KGB, the couple filmed what was happening on video "for the sake of hype." The man opened fire on the security forces and mortally wounded one of them. It was destroyed by return fire. His wife was accused of complicity in the crime. According to the Devby.io portal with a link to human rights defenders, Kiriyenko was detained as follows: "five people approached in uniform without identification marks, twisted, broke and taken to the police department."

We can say that he was kidnapped. They did not even introduce themselves and only in the local police department he was told that he was allegedly a witness in the case. But then they began to "rock" the situation, knocked out all his passwords and logins, and there some correspondence and comments surfaced on social networks. And on the basis of these correspondence, it was closed, - said the interlocutors of the publication.
