2023: Program Creation

Specialists of Peter the Great Polytechnic University in St. Petersburg created the first Russian software for a 3D printer working with metals. Oleg Panchenko, head of the Laboratory of Light Materials and Structures of SPBPU, shared this news with TASS in June 2023.

This is the first domestic development of this kind, moreover, there is only one commercially available foreign development, and this is not even software, "he said.

SPbPU specialists created the first Russian software for a 3D printer working with metals

According to Panchenko, the new software can be used in the metallurgical and aviation industries, as well as in shipbuilding - new technologies will significantly increase productivity in all these industries. He also stressed that the technology has great interest from universities and large industrial companies, including Rostec and Rosatom. Such a printer will work with manual programming, but this takes much longer.

In order to program a printer to print one layer of a small product, you need to program 1.5 thousand pixels. Manually do this - imagine for yourself how long it will take. And this is only one layer - and there will be hundreds or thousands of them there. And the software will do the same with all layers in a couple of minutes, - said the head of the Laboratory of Light Materials and Structures of SPBPU.

He also stressed that with the help of this software it will be possible to create products from aluminum alloys, titanium, etc. In particular, it will be possible to print the rocket body, ship's propeller, battery body - "almost anything," Panchenko said.

Plastic 3D printers have already come into use and are widely used. There are similar printers that print metal products - for example, we print using a raw material in the form of a wire. All these printers, one way or another, work with software, and our development is precisely that we have created such software for working with a metal printer, "he concluded.[1]
