SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for h86_64 IBM Power Systems and for IBM System z is a server operating system for providing crucial IT services in different environments: physical, virtual and cloud. Functions, such as possibility of rollback of changes and application of kernel patches without reset, considerably increase time of continuous operation of servers, increase efficiency of data processing centers and accelerate transition to the innovative technologies of the free software. The new version of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server confirms leadership of SUSE company in improvement of Linux Containers technology. Docker framework is also an integral part of the operating system now.

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 completely implements advantages of the IBM POWER8 processor. Support of the Linux-applications with the return order of bytes (little-endian) both in the multithreaded (SMT8) mode, and in the environment of PowerKVM is added. SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for System z increases performance of workloads due to support of a command set of two last generations of IBM System z processors, the improved support of cryptographic coprocessors and some other improvements — for example, quicker format of DASD c interfaces of dasdfmt or support of the multiple NETIUCV connection between Linux and z/VM devices.

Historical milestones:

  • In 1999, one year prior to official support of Linux on mainframes of IBM, SUSE of Linux (the purchased Novell in 2004) began cooperation with IBM and Marist College to transfer the Linux code to the Linux distribution kit for mainframes, ready to application at the enterprises.
  • In 2000 SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for S/390 became the only thing the commercial, completely supported distribution kit of a corporate class for mainframes of IBM. The same year Telia, the largest telecommunication company of Sweden, became the first big commercial customer of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for S/390.
  • In 2001 SUSE of Linux and IBM officially issued the technical partnership and cooperation.
  • In 2002 IBM released the 64-bit version of a mainframe of S/390. SUSE of Linux of the first offered the 64-bit version of the Linux distribution kit for this architecture.
  • In 2009 Novell released SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 for System z, having provided the cost-efficient solution of crucial computing tasks with support of new, advanced systems capabilities.
  • IBM and Novell continue collaboration in transfer on a mainframe of new tasks, such as .NET-applications working in the environment of execution of Novell Mono for System z.


From 3150 Linux-based applications on System z which are supported by IBM more than 1000 are the certified third-party commercial applications listed in the directory of partners of Novell on software development on the SUSE Linux Enterprise Server platform for System z, including the application from Chordiant Software, IBM Cognos, IBM DB2, IBM WebSphere, IBM Tivoli and SAP. If to proposals of third-party developers to add packets open source, then the quantity available to customers and partners of the applications supported by SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for System z exceeds 3000. The ecosystem of SUSE Linux Enterprise for System z amplifies also numerous partners among whom Computacenter, Infinity, MSI Systems Integrators, Mainline, PROFI AG, Sirius and Vicom Infinity.
