On May 17, 2022, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Ecology of the Russian Federation announced the creation of a unified register of drinking water in the country. It will include databases of Rosnedr, Rosvodresurs, Rospotrebnadzor and subjects.

According to the statement of the Ministry of Natural Resources, in the register you can see information about water reserves, how many water resources are put on the balance sheet, where mining is carried out, whether resources and other data are rationally used.

We will be able to balance and redistribute capacities between water-deficient regions and regions where there are enough water resources, "said Alexander Kozlov, Minister of Natural Resources and Ecology.

He noted that the digital platform will be in the public domain and will allow controlling water reserves. The system is planned to be launched by the end of 2022

The Tula region has become a pilot region where a platform of a single water registry is being worked out. Then the Kaluga region will join the experiment. As the Ministry of Natural Resources emphasizes, these two regions differ from each other both in the presence of water bodies and in the distribution of licenses.

According to the data of the automated subsoil use licensing system, which records licenses for the right to use water resources, by May 17, 2022, 7,757 federal licenses for the extraction of groundwater for drinking water supply and 48,136 regional licenses were issued in Russia. At the same time, the head of the Ministry of Natural Resources noted that the database on licenses issued in the regions is still incomplete. On behalf of the Minister, Russian entities must submit information on all issued licenses for the extraction of water resources until June 20, 2022.

In April 2022, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin said that in 2021, as part of the Clean Water project, 87.3% of Russians managed to provide quality drinking liquid, and 259 water supply facilities were put into operation.[1]
