Xen Cloud Platform 1.6 (XCP)

In the fall of 2012 the community of Xen developers announced release of upgraded version of the Xen Cloud Platform 1.6 (XCP) platform which is intended for management of cloud infrastructure based on Xen hypervisor (in a sense it is an analog of commercial XenServer).

XCP is constructed based on a free hypervisor of Xen (in the new version - 4.1.3) to which different opportunities for creation of cloud infrastructures by means of Xen API toolstack are applied. The XCP platform is distributed under the license GNU General Public License (GPL2).

New opportunities of Xen Cloud Platform 1.6:

  • The Storage XenMotion technology allowing to carry out migration of the working virtual machines per other host and storage, at the same time hosts can be in different pools and not have the general storage, i.e. hot migration of VM is available between local disks a host servers.
  • The Live Virtual Disk Image migration technology giving opportunities to migration of VM without its switching off.
  • Improvements of network interaction:
  • Support of Link Aggregation Control Protocol (LACP)
  • Source Load Balancing (SLB) technology
  • Multi-tenancy improvements
  • Improvements of scalability of VLAN networks
  • Technology of rollback of the Emergency Network Reset settings
  • Support of IPv6 in guest OS
  • The simplified mechanism for change of vCPU for Control Domain ("dom0")
  • The updated Open vSwitch switch to version 1.4.2 with improvements of stability and performance
  • Support of Integrated StorageLink (iSL) technology for arrays of EMC VNX
  • Tekhnlogiya GPU Pass-through (probros video cards in guest OS): support to 4 GPU per host server
  • Improvements for integration into third-party solutions: baynding for XenAPI for language C, the Workload Balancing (WLB) expansions and the general improvements
  • Support of the hypervisor monitoring equipment (vhostmd) allowing SAP applications to work in the XCP virtual machine

The new supported guest OS in XCP 1.6:

  • Ubuntu 12.04
  • CentOS 5.7, 1.5, 6.1, 6.2
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.7, 6.1, 6.2
  • Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.7, 6.1, 6.2
