2015: MGTS buys 1.1 million routers

On December 7, 2015 more than 1 million routers for connection to the Internet on an optical network of GPON became known of plans of MGTS for acquisition (gigabit passive optical networks — the standard means laying of optical fiber to each apartment).

MGTS announced a tender on delivery of 1.1 million GPON routers at the starting price slightly less than 4.7 billion rubles (about $68.5 million at the rate of the Central Bank for December 8, 2015), Vedomosti with reference to the tender documentation published by the operator writes.

According to the representative of MGTS Tatyana Martyanova, the company is going to purchase the routers of new generation working in the ranges of 2.4 and 5 GHz and also providing subscribers with access rate on Wi-Fi to 1 Gbps that in 10 times more to the maximum speed of the equipment which is earlier installed by the operator.

As notes the edition, the starting price of tender of MGTS is based on the maximum cost of one GPON router in $63. It corresponds to market price, the head of Iskratelekom Alkhas Mirzabekov says. According to him, the purchased batch from 1.1 million devices there will last MGTS for one-two years.

Martyanova claims that demand for high-speed connections on GPON grows: in January-September, 2015 the number of users of tariff plans with speeds of 100-250 Mbps (access on a cable means) increased by 600% in comparison with an indicator of year prescription, and the number of broadband access subscribers with a speed of 350-500 Mbps for this period increased by 63%.[1]
