Originally the project thought as research network which connected among themselves educational institutions, univesiteta. However further the network was actively used by the Ministry of Defence for the organization of effective communication between military operational points. A part which was used by military structures later received the name MILNet (Military Network). In APRANet it was for the first time used protocol TCP/IP that allows to consider such network by the direct predecessor Internet.
