Communication in trains and airplanes

2019: Russia will start the fast Internet in airplanes and trains

On November 21, 2019 it became known that in airplanes and trains in Russia the high-speed Internet will appear. It is for this purpose going to start an experimental segment from ten repeaters with a range of 150 km for everyone (at a cellular tower it is on average the 5th km).

Airplanes and trains equip with the devices accepting and transmitting a signal, Izvestia with reference to the press service of the National Technology Initiative (NTI) writes.

Standards of Wi-fi or 4G do not provide stable Internet access at speeds of 90−120 km/h and above and also reach more than 20 km, said in the project presentation. Russia found the solutions allowing to provide with communication objects, moving with speeds up to 1.5 thousand km/h.

Authors of the project want to implement an idea so that a system was compatible to the existing standards of cellular communication, for example, of a 5G.

By 2025 it is going to start experimental network segment in Gelendzhik, and the first pilot area — on the Moscow — Adler direction. The total cost of the approved project is not specified.

According to initiators of the project, Internet access only on the railroad can bring 21.5 billion rubles a year. An indicator on the air transport — about 5 billion rubles.

The project applies for grant support of the Russian venture capital company on condition of investment of capital of private investors, specified in the press service of NTI. Financial parameters did not open there. The source Izvestia, familiar with project parts, says that one tower at the initial stage will cost about 2 million rubles. Cost value considerably will decrease when mass production of such equipment in our country is arranged, he added.

According to the deputy administrator of Competence center of NTI "Skoltech" Vitaly Shuba, the need for the fast Internet for transport is big, but construction of the towers suitable for this purpose is profitable only in densely populated regions of the country.[1]
