The administration of the Smolensk region implements cluster technologies of VMware

Softline implemented products of VMware and Veeam in Department of the Smolensk region on information technologies, communication and ensuring provision of services in electronic form.

Objectives

Due to the increase in number of tasks of operational commissioning of new software packages and applications for needs of the Smolensk region in Department there was a need for reducing costs for purchase of new servers and increase in fault tolerance of a system in general.

Solution

Staff of the organization carried out experimental installation of infrastructure of VMware on the available server hardware using the free software which is specially provided for these purposes by Softline company. On one server four services were at the same time started. The technology of virtualization of VMware showed not only possibilities of more rational use of production capacities, but also controls of both physical servers, and virtual machines from the single console of management VMware vCenter.

Results

Commissioning of the cluster constructed based on solutions of VMware and Veeam was performed jointly with specialists of Softline company on the purchased equipment consisting of three servers and a storage system. Start of the servers purchased in the subsequent happened independently.

Now on nodes of a cluster are started more than forty virtual machines migration from physical servers on Wednesday of virtualization using VMware Converter technology was made for five of which; five absolutely new services were installed directly on virtual machines. Administrators of Department had an opportunity from scratch to configure the remained machines for full translation of services in virtual environment.

At the moment loading of processors of the server hardware makes no more than 10%, use of RAM – at the level of 30% that will allow to increase further the number of virtual machines on the current configuration of a cluster approximately twice without damage of fault tolerance of a system.

In a project deliverable with a total cost of 2.4 million rubles in the organization the hardware utilization coefficient increased, costs for replacement of "iron" decreased, the flexibility of use of virtual servers, controllability of a server framework increased.
