A half of operations on creation of the animated film "Puss in Boots" of DreamWorks studio was executed using a cloud of HP. If the studio had to increase the technology capacities for production of a picture, then it would spend for it millions of dollars.

The film company DreamWorks Animation SKG, the author of recently released animation movie "Puss in Boots", announced that she for creation of a tape used technologies of HP, including cloud services.

Technology cooperation of DreamWorks and HP began in 2001: the film company applies convergent infrastructure of HP as a technology platform to preparation of difficult animation projects. Actually this platform creates the future of digital production of movies. To create the full-length tapes DreamWorks Animation uses the mass of various technologies of HP — from workstations and network equipment to cloud services of digital rendering.

Technologies of HP played a key role in creation of many movies of DreamWorks, including a series of movies "Shrek" and also the films "How to Tame a Dragon", "Kung Fu Panda" and "Kung Fu Panda 2", said in the statement of the company.

"Puss in Boots" - one of the most technology difficult pictures of DreamWorks studio - is created using cloud services of HP

So, by production of the movie "Puss in Boots" artists used more than 200 high-performance HP Z800 workstations. At HP workstations all elements of the movie — from the main character, Kot, to digital effects like powerful tornadoes and cloud landscapes were created.

Rendering of scenes of "Puss in Boots" was performed on five server farms which are in the different regions of the USA and India and constructed based on ProLiant BL460 blade-HP servers. In general a blade servers processed unprecedented amount of data — 117 Tbyte, and more than 60 million hours of machine time were in total spent for rendering of the movie.

To cope with processing of large volumes of the data necessary for production of the movie, DreamWorks implemented cloud services of HP that allowed to avoid building of own technical resources on which, according to estimates, millions of dollars would be required. Eight million hours of rendering from in the general slozhnosti63 one million spent hours, were executed using cloud services of HP. Thus, 45% of total amount of use of cloud services a film studio fell to the share of rendering.

Also HP solutions are involved in creation of the scalable 10-gigabit network environment of DreamWorks consisting of global and local networks. This Networking HP family: switches of the HP 12508 and 5800 series and also system of HP of Networking Intelligent Management Center and HP Intelligent Resilient Framework. Besides, in DreamWorks the network system of storage of HP X9000 IBRIX which allows to increase capacity according to present and future requirements of a film studio is used.

By production of "Puss in Boots" were used as well HP printers with support of DreamColor technology on which printout of high-quality color copies of the works created by creative group was executed. The DreamColor technology for HP printers of HP and DreamWorks company was developed jointly, as well as the professional LCD monitor of HP DreamColor Monitor exceeding the existing LCD displays on the characteristics.
