Vasilyev Alexey Mikhaylovich
Was born on April 26, 1939 in Leningrad (St. Petersburg) in family of the employee.
In 1956 entered MGIMO of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the USSR. Passed a training in the Cairo university (1960-1961). In 1962 graduated from East department of Faculty of the international relations of MGIMO and it was distributed in Pravda newspaper editorial office by the assistant to the political analyst. In 1967 it was sent to Vietnam as own "military" correspondent of the Pravda. Remaining in this position, in 1969-1971 was in the office of the editorial office, repeatedly went abroad for covering of events in "hot a point".
From 1971 to 1975 A.M. Vasilyev is own correspondent of the Pravda newspaper in Ankara on the region Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, the country of Arabia. It left also for publicizing of the Arab-Israeli war of 1973 to Syria. In 1975-1979 – own correspondent of the Pravda newspaper across Egypt, Sudan, Libya, Yemen, Ethiopia. From 1979 to 1983 – the observer of department of the international problems of the Pravda newspaper. From the first days of work in the Pravda newspaper combined journalism and literary work with purely academic researches.
In 1966 finished the correspondence postgraduate study at Institute of oriental studies of Academy of Sciences of the USSR, defended the master's thesis on a subject: "Wahhabism and first state of Saudidov in Arabia". In 1981 defended the doctoral dissertation on a subject in the same place: "Evolution of socio-political structure of Saudi Arabia of 1745-1973".
A.M. Vasilyev in 1983 was appointed the associate director of Institute of Africa Academy of Sciences of the USSR, and in 1992 was elected the director of this institute and was repeatedly re-elected.
The director of RAS Organization of institute of Africa of the Russian Academy of Sciences (since 1992). The full member of RAS (it is chosen in 2011). The special representative of the Russian President on communications with leaders of the African states (from 2006 to 2011). Member of section of the international security of Security Council of the Russian Federation. Professor (since 1991) The Chief Editor of the "Asia and Africa Today" magazine (since 1998). The coordinator of the international section of Scientific expert advice at the Chairman of the Federation Council of Russia. The chairman of Scientific council of RAS on problems of economic, socio-political and cultural development of the countries of Africa. The member of council on foreign policy the Russian Foreign Ministry. Honored worker of science of the Russian Federation (2002). The winner of an award of RAS of E.V. Tarle for 2003.
