The Kuban State University completed creation of the computer system

The Kuban State University integrates faculties, branches and the remote body in a single virtual network creation of own computer system on the Cisco Unified Computing System (UCS) platform with the assistance of IBS company integrator, the press service of Cisco company reported on July 2, 2013.

Project Tasks

In 2012 the management of the Kuban State University (KUBSU) decided to construct own data processing center (DPC), integrating it into the existing telecommunication infrastructure. The decision was made on the basis of the analysis of IT infrastructure of the university which is carried out with involvement of independent experts of IBM company.

Creation of own computer system the management of the Kuban State University aimed to consolidate the majority of the available server applications and information resources of university in virtual environment and to pass to use of technologies of virtualization of desktops (VDI) and also cloud computing.

Choice of the contractor and course of the project

When choosing the supplier of a server framework of a data processing center the solutions for DPCs presented at the market are comprehensively analyzed. A choice was made for benefit of the integrated computing Cisco Unified Computing System (UCS) platform and also convergent switches of a core of DPC network Cisco Nexus N5548UP, switches of nodes of distribution of Cisco Catalyst 3750X network, a control device by Cisco SCE 2020 services, etc.

Telecommunication infrastructure of the main university campus of KUBSU, is constructed on the basis of fiber lines of communication and integrates four educational and scientific body, four hostels, plant of a student's power supply, the pool.

Project plans and hopes

Project implementation the Kuban State University will be able to optimize use of computing resources, to improve controllability of IT infrastructure, to simplify solving of tasks, connected with management of university and to increase capacities in the future. All this promotes increase in efficiency and quality of education in KUBSU.

Project Completion

On November 11, 2013 the IBS company announced project completion of creation of the computer system on the Cisco Unified Computing System (UCS) platform.

During the second half of the year 2012 specialists of the company IBS also Kuban State University brought into operation a server framework of a data processing center on the basis of the integrated computing platform Cisco Unified Computing System (UCS), convergent switches of a core of network DPC Cisco Nexus N5548UP, switches of nodes of distribution of network Cisco Catalyst 3750X, a control device by Cisco SCE 2020 services, etc. As a storage system the solution is used IBM Storwize V7000 Unified, and software environment of infrastructure of virtualization are products of the companies VMware and Microsoft.

The DPC of university is constructed taking into account a limit of space for placement of racks and power limiting of power supply. On the basis of the constructed DPC the university develops a private cloud which is designed to satisfy all available requirements of departments, branches, scientific laboratories and other divisions of the university for computing powers (using the IaaS model). Each structural division will receive a part of the centralized computing resource, and in need of IT service of the university will be able quickly to select with it additional capacities, controlling loading of network in general.
