Company

In August, 2013 the Western Digital company, announced that it became one of founders of Storage Products Association (SPA) — Associations of producers of data storage devices. As cofounders other companies which are engaged in production of hard drives — HGST, Seagate, Toshiba and WD act. The purpose of association – promotion of drives on magnetic hard drives, assistance to consumers and notification about an important role and effective use of HDD and SSHD.

The organization will help producers and users it is better to understand the current and future demands in data storage devices taking into account the growing requirements. Including, it is about a key role of hard drives (HDD) and hybrid solid-state disks (SSHD) for consumer and business environments, about a combination of these solutions, effective, scalable and optimal at cost. SPA will carry out educational work among the clients, partners, members of association and end users. Besides, the association will participate in different industrial and user actions, to publish materials about needs of end users and effective use of the mixed technologies.

"Till 2020 demand for drives, presumably, will grow approximately for 30% annually. It is caused by rapid growth of digital content which inevitably increases the need for data storage devices — Tim Leyden, the president of WD said. – Properly to meet this demand, it is necessary to combine optimum technologies of hard drives and solid state drives. It is expected that 75% of all capacities will still be NMZhD. Each modern user of the smartphone, tablet or personal computer depends on that how reliable will be the drives HDD or SSHD, it is unimportant whether information on its own device or is stored in a cloud. SPA will help consumers and to the enterprises is realistic to estimate the growing needs for drives and to pick up technologies which will reliably save and will protect their content".

SPA debuted at the summit of producers a flash memory (Flash Memory Summit) which is taking place now in Santa Clara Convention Center. Members of association participated in a panel discussion "Solid-state hybrid disks meet today's requirements to information storage". John Ridning, the vice president of IDC for researches acted as the moderator of a panel.
