Network Convergence System is a product family of network convergence for support of the comprehensive and pervasive Internet.

On September 25, 2013 Cisco Systems announced a new product family of Cisco Network Convergence System (NCS) which, according to the strategy of the company, should become a basis of the scalable Internet differing in higher intellectuality and adaptability.

Cisco NCS is the industry-first high-performance convergent system of an operator class intended for virtualization of telecommunication services, simplification of operating activities and consolidation of infrastructure for the purpose of increase in profitability of the operator and expansion of the user functionality.

Specific Features

Being set as a part of architecture of Cisco ONE operator, products of the Cisco NCS family help the operator to reduce total cost of ownership by 45% and for 60 percent to reduce energy consumption. Cisco NCS can transfer (in a multichassis configuration) for fractions of a second on network all library Netflix.


As a part of Cisco NCS:

  • The programmable network processor which is most scaled in the industry. The solutions Cisco NCS are based on the integrated network Cisco nPower X1 processor which has qualitatively new performance level and bandwidth, the programmable nPU functions and the advanced functionality of memory management. All this allows it to support requirements of the Comprehensive Internet. As a result operators can adapt the offers to requirements of customers with almost unlimited flexibility. The nPower X1 processor for the first time without any compromises maintains capacity of 400 Gbps on one chip, showing the multiterabit density, best in the industry, and performance. All functions of processing of packets, traffic management and input-output are integrated on one chip and work with the high performance and scalability. The high processor power of the nPower processor allows it to manage trillions of events generated by the devices connected to networks. On one nPower X1 processor 4 billion transistors supporting rather high level of performance, functionality, programmability and scalability are installed.

  • Intellectual convergence, optimization and efficiency. The Cisco NCS technology provides convergence of IP-and optical networks and their integration with the innovative solutions of Cisco for the data processing centers including the Cisco UCS systems and functions of dynamic automation Dynamic Fabric Automation. It allows Cisco NCS to perform in Cisco EPN network (Evolved Programmable Network) a role of the flexible "central nervous system" capable instantly, in real time to regroup and redistribute resources of DPC, resources of reference, edge and optical networks, allowing operators to increase the speed of delivery of the services, to reduce complexity of infrastructure and to cut down operating costs.

In the networks built based on Cisco NCS the multi-tier architecture of management of Cisco nLight which integrates different levels of network of the operator in uniform infrastructure is used, providing necessary convergence and information exchange between network and optical levels. This functionality creates the new level of transparency and integration between the networks separated earlier, allowing to increase considerably efficiency of use of network, having at the same time reduced complexity of its operation and further development

Possibilities of virtualization

The possibilities of system and architectural virtualization supported by Cisco NCS technology allow to manage services and resources of diverse physical, virtual and geographical elements as the single unified system using the solutions Cisco Prime and Cisco Quantum. The functionality of virtualization allows operators to increase in case of need flexibly or, on the contrary, to reduce network and computing resources using the configurations set on a set of the chassis and managed as a unit. If scaling options in any part of network reach the maximum limit, Cisco NCS transfers control functions to the Cisco UCS servers in a data processing center.

Components

As a part of the Cisco NCS family three principal components which can be managed as the single integrated system:

  • the NCS 6000 component (is already available) with a capacity of 5 Tbit / with on the slot and 1.2 Pbit / with on a system. Supports routing of IP/MPLS and three configurations: single, double (back-to-back) and a configuration with a set of the chassis (multi-chassis).
  • the NCS 4000 component (will appear in the market in the first half of 2014) will have the volume of 400 Gbps on the slot and 6.4 Tbit / with on a system. It will also be available in three configurations: single, double and with a set of the chassis. NCS 4000 will support the applications OTN + WDM + Ethernet + MPLS-TP.
  • the NCS 2000 component (is already available) is a basis for creation of the intellectual DWDM infrastructure of the next generation intended for the transfer of 100 Gbps and more on one wavelength and supporting flexible, completely dynamic setup of new generation of ROADM that allows to provide any services between any points of network of the operator at any time.

Cisco Network Convergence System (NCS) 4200

Cisco Network Convergence System (NCS) 4200 is the transport system as a part of infrastructure of Cisco Evolved Programmable Network (EPN) intended for increase in efficiency of network using technology of the dense emulation of channels which is taken out on the network periphery. It will transform TDM services to the emulated channels (pseudowires), facilitating transportation on exclusively scalable backbone networks of MPLS.

Using this technology, service providers save the available operational models and service revenue, giving at the same time all services on IP networks and taking the outdate networks out of service. In comparison with existing solutions the prize of service providers on the area of placement and power consumption can reach 90%.

Cisco Network Convergence System (NCS) 4000

Increase in density and flexibility of a line of Cisco NCS 4000. The multiservice plug-in line card doubles slot bandwidth to 400 Gbps, allowing to work at the same time flexibly with OTN services, packet forwarding, MPLS and Coherent DWDM by the principle of gradual building of ports and payments in process of expansion. When installing a payment on the Cisco NCS 4009 and NCS 4016 platforms density of the chassis doubles up to 3.6 and 6.4 Tbit / with, respectively. Thanks to the leading Cisco technologies improvement of NCS 4000 factory allowed to implement scaling without interruption of service from one Cisco NCS 4000 chassis (6.4 Tbit / c) to the solution based on several chassis with the general capacity over 100 Tbit / page.
